I just read in a fashion magazine of
a large study (more than 1,000) in the UK
examining the causes of GERD, diarrhea,
IBS, etc. They found that benzos, ADs,
and carbonated drinks were all directly
linked.Squiggles

I think this has been known for quite a while. It's believed that carbonated drinks cause gastric distention (relax lower esophageal sphincter), so increases likelihood that contents from stomach may go backwards up into esophagus. Alpha and beta-blockers, alcohol, anticholinergics, benzos, narcotics, nicotine, nitrates, calcium channel blockers, theophylline and some other drugs are believed to be risk factors for GERD due to decreasing lower esophageal sphincter pressure.
