i'm planning on going off all my meds in middle march to try to get pregnant but my pdoc said to have emergency meds available, ones that are proven safe during preg.
i've heard that the only AD that would be ok is prozac and haldol for the dysphoric mania stuff. now my doc says that prozac is causing respitory disdress in children. so that is out as a back up.
do you know of any AD that are safe during preg?
about the haldol, my pdoc says it is safe during preg...is that true? has anyone heard or know anything different?
to be honest, i think i may be able to handle the dpression but i'm worried about how i get when i bounce up. it's usually no sleep and get really angry at EVERYTHING. and i get a little well, i'd say aggitated but that doesn't describe it. i become innodated with thoughts in my head and am scattered beyond belief. zyprexa works for me now...your help is appreciated.
thanks

Check out motherisk.org, they have info on safe drugs.
The good news is that Wellbutrin really does seem to be safe in pregnancy -- no effects they can see in animal studies. Of course, that doesn't mean that it won't have any effects, but it does make it safer than the SSRIs. The SSRIs, which are considered Category C, actually do have effects on the fetus. They range from cardiac development problems, to low birth weight and the withdrawal at birth, etc. Enough so that I won't consider them. (And Paxil is apparently also teratogenic, but that's another story.)
I didn't see any safe mood stabilizers, though. I guess it depends on what you consider "safe enough." If you're willing to go with a Category C drug, that would probably be easier -- and since you wouldn't need to be on it full time, it sounds like, that might not be a problem for you.
Good luck.

Hi B2C
Haloperidol (Haldol, Serenace) is thought to be one of the less dangerous anti-manic drugs to use during pregnancy. Nevertheless, there are potential risks to the fetus and I would reserve it for emergency 'when required' use rather that taking it regularly.
Have you ever taken haloperidol?
