Its a serious antibiotic, not one used casually -- its unfortunate that there have been liver disease links, but antibiotics are always staying one step ahead of being useless, especially overprescribing. It has some proven advantages for preventing resistance. Ultimately it and all its predecessors will become useless. The worst problem though is staying ahead of MRSA hospital aquired infections as vancomycin (the last resort drug of recent times) is becoming less useful. The latest one (warning, not a pleasant picture) is Zyvox http://www.zyvox.com/Index.asp?hcp=true
An interesting timeline of antibiotics can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_antibiotics

the zyvox sounds pretty hard on the body, too! did you read all of the cautionary statements?

Assuredly, it has some pretty harsh drug-drug reactions, but it sure beats MRSA and fatalities due to vancomycin resistance. Its a last ditch antibiotic for the intensive care / surgery wards who are averse to these situations.
