The following questions are for anyone who has taken Memantine:
Does Memantine have any antidepressant qualities?
Did you experience any cognitive improvement while on Memantine?
If you did not notice any antidepressant effects from Memantine, would you say that it's sort of like Lamictal in that it "augments" antidepressants?

i have not tried it, but i seem to remember that the NMDA receptor is a new proposed mode of action for antidepressants to be investigated. i think it has helped some people here. it may also be helpful with chronic fatigue, though that is just extrapolating from Dr. Jay A. Goldstein's theory. i know that it has helped with is it's cognitive effects in people that have posted... but maybe only with memory. it seems like a drug worth looking at if your insurance covers it.
PS. Does anyone know if it is coming out in Canada, or maybe even already out yet?

Hi
Memantine is already available in Canada. The brand name is Ebixa.

Memantine does seem to be slightly anxiolytic. It somewhat normalizes the degree of glutamate use, espcially, if I recall correctly, in the striatum, and other motor areas of the brain. It's also used in alzherimer's, however, and I have heard from Dr.s who are curious if it can help in ADHD and other "hypofrontal" problems. It has little to no side effects at low to moderate dosages, however, at higher dosages, I belive their are side effects that are somewhat comparable to PCP, except not without the rage (as I've heard.) It can definitely induce dementia at higher dosages. It would probably be best to augment it with another antidepressant, ore lamictal, depending on the pharamcokinetics. Hope this helps.

Hi. Thanks to all of you for your replies. Idolamine (that's an interesting name!), I gather from your post that you have not tried Memantine yet. Isn't it interesting that an Alzheimer's drug induces dementia at higher doses.
Several years ago, I read about some preclinical studies on the use of Memantine for preventing or attenuating stimulant tolerance. I haven't heard anything about that since.
This is the end of the thread.
