Tenex (guanfacine) and ADHD

Posted by mike99 on January 24, 2006, at 17:57:07

Can anyone share any experiences or thoughts about guanfacine for ADHD?

Hyperactivity vs inattention?

Is it's action as an alpha-2 agonist likely to cause depression?

I've read it's more selective than clonidine and therefore perhaps more superior ("Guanfacine, but not clonidine, improves planning and working memory in humans"--Neuropsychopharmacology 1999; May).

I take Entex for sinus problems, I think it's called Entex...it's guanfacine and pseudoephedrine...or something like that, and I have ADD inattentive, but I don't think the Entex does anything for the ADD. I take other meds for that, and it doesn't add to the effectiveness or take away from it.

Hi Fairly,

>I take Entex for sinus problems, I think it's called Entex...it's guanfacine and pseudoephedrine...

It contains guaiphenesin Fairy, not guanfacine!

From doing some additional research it seems Tenex (guanfacine) primarily affects impulsiveness and hyperactivity, with little if any affect on attention.

Unfortunately :(

I get the impression than guanfacine is most useful for nightmare hyperactive/violent/impulsive children!

Tenex (guanfacine) is approved in the US as a blood pressure medicine, so I imagine it's also available for this purpose in Canada...perhaps under a different brand name though.

Yeah, I get the impression it helps more with hyperactivity and impulsiveness rather than attention.

Has anyone had improved attention span with Tenex? (nm)

> We just started Guanfacine for my 10yr old. He has ADHD,impulsivity, hyperactive type and just diagnosed with bipolar I. Rx'd as .5mg in the PM for 1 week and then add .5mg in the AM. We are now in day 2 of the BID dosing. No obvious results yet. I would like to hear if anyone else has read/experienced any impact positive or negative in using guafacine/Tenex in this way.
