Nardil v Parnate and sexual dysfuntion...

Posted by Shedwick on January 21, 2006, at 0:27:33

I've been taking Nardil since 1990. Best thing (for me) since sliced bread! 30 mg t.i.d. BUT,
I have sexual issues with this med. It's hard to get an erection sometimes, and it takes me a long time to have an orgasm. Sometimes I can't.

I got married to a beautiful, sexy gal last year.
She has been very patient with me.

I decided to slowly get off my phenalzine and, after off for two full weeks (and feeling crummy),
I started a trial of Wellbutrin.

Well, I'd just look at my penis and I'd have an immediate orgasm...faster orgasms then I remember as a teen! But the Wellbutrin, after only a week, was making me very irritable. So I stopped that (for two weeks), and went back on Uncle Nardil. That was this past August.

My mood is fine, but the sexual problem is back.
I'm 55 and in decent condition.

I'm thinking of switching to Parnate. I drink coffee like there is no tomorrow...I've never had any adverse reactions. I eat cheese, but stay away from the real fermented stuff. I'm not much of a drinker, so beer and wines aren't an issue. If I drink, it's vodka and coke, with no side effects. Tyramine (especially heavy cream) really kicks my butt, so I steer clear of that.

And of course, I don't do dextromethoraphan or psuedephedrine.

Anyone had similar problems with Nardil? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Shedwick

From a female who had a similar problem ....When on the Old Nardil ...there is nothing wrong with skipping a dose for a Saturday or weekend day...that used to be helpful for me .......My DR recommended Yohimbe back then but I never really gave it a chance......In the long run decided better to be fat, unrequited, instead of feeling miserable!!

One guy on here says testosterone works wonders. I don't know if its hard to get or if a doctor would prescribe it. I tried Ginko Biloba with the SSRIs and it helped slightly. I'm at 60mg of Nardil and notice some sexual effects. I know if/when I go up in dose I can look forward to more sexual sides. You're at 90mg now. Is that the dose you really saw an improvement in your depression?
I've heard Parnate is not as bad on sexual function.
