I take a relativly high dosage of depakote, 1250....and if i get anything less than 8 hours sleep, it takes nothing less than a fire engine in my bedroom to wake me up.
Is this common? or is this just the way i am.thanks

From what I've heard anecdotally somnolence is not an uncommon reaction during the weeks following initation of Depakote therapy and/or dose increases. How long have you been on the Depakote? If it's just a little while you might want to hang in there and see if this gets better.
Another thing that I've read somewhere (again, anecdotal) that Depakote might increase your total sleep requirement. I think someone said it was good for about 15-30 extra minutes a night. So if you're getting benefits from the Depakote, you might want to try increasing your sleep time for a while...
Good luck,

Hi Phillipa,
Unfortuntately, I had a pretty atypical reaction to Depakote. (Par for the course with me...) It didn't make me sleepy at all, but actually reduced the quality of my sleep substantially. I felt like I was just skimming the surface all night long... :(
Anyway, I hope that you're doing alright. What ended up happening with the Trileptal trial?
Best,

Not so far for me. I'm still waking up too early. But it's not been long and it's a low dose so far. I'd give a lot to be able to sleep a little longer in the morning. But I know it's a pain if you have to get up and just can't get going.Marsha

How long have you been on the Depakote? Do you have any other side effects? Is it for bipolar and do you find that it helps?
