Cymbalta and Wellbutrin

Posted by antigua on January 10, 2006, at 9:11:43

I'm sure this has been answered before, but my pdoc is thinking of adding Wellbutrin to my Cymbalta (60mg) to battle my afternoon lethargy/extreme tiredness. (I'm also on small amount of klonopin .25 and .50 daily).
Two questions: does adding the Wellbutrin work, and does Wellbutrin cause weight gain?
thanks,
antigua

I can't tell you anything authoritatively, but Wellbutrin and Cymbalta was a pretty good mix for me, and when I stopped Cymbalta last month, I kept the Wellbutrin, and even raised it at my last doctor's visit.

So far as I can tell, the Wellbutrin doesn't seem t ohave an effect on weight. It has a reputation -- amongst those of us who take these drugs, not just amongst doctors who prescribe them and then say, "You've gained weight because you're eating more" -- for being weight neutral.

Hope that helps.

I've heard the same and some others use it to boost sexual drive. Fondly, Phillipa

Racer,

Hi. I was wondering why you stopped Cymbalta.

Two reasons: it didn't seem to be doing anything useful; and I was trying to get pregnant, and SRIs are contraindicated in pregnancy.

Hope that helps. And you're always welcome to babblemail if you have any specific questions.

Hi Racer,

Very interesting. I have one more question. . . how long were you on Cymbalta, and at what dosage? A lot of people say it's like Effexor. Would you agree with that?

Sarah

I was on Cymbalta for nearly a year and a half -- August 2004 to December 2005. The dosage varied -- mostly 60mg, but we tried up to 90mg, and I tried lowering it to 40mg, then 20mg. No dose made the benefits outweigh the adverse effects for me. The only reason I kept taking it, really, is that my doctor wanted me to. That's why I have a new doctor now.

Is it like Effexor? Yes. And no. It's got a similar mechanism of action, but it's a different feeling. I found both somewhat sedating, Cymbalta much more so. Effexor was much more effective for me, although not enough to push me into remission. Cymbalta really only made a slight dent in my mood, and improved pain for me. The problem with both for me was that the good effects did not last.

Hope that helps.

I was on Effexor for about two years and I really didn't like the numbing feeling. I never cried and was way out of touch w/my feelings. I started Cymbalta a couple of months ago and I really like it better. I can cry, I can feel. I'm still so darned tired, though.
So, everyone is different.
Good luck,
antigua

Hi Racer,

Did your doctor ever suggest augmenting either Cymbalta or Effexor with something more activating to counteract some of the side effects or to potentiate some of the benefits of either drug?
