Hey everyone. I havent posted in a long time but i miss this place. I hope everyone is doing well and had a good christmas/holiday.
Some funny things have been happening to me. I take 15-20mg of valium a day, and anyway my dad works in management at the local hospital and drug rehab center. He wants me to go into rehab to get off valium!!!!!! Thanks Ed for telling me its a bad idea, I will take your advice on cutting down.
I wonder if there is an alternative that i could take every now and again. I use to be on Ativan but I have a history of benzo abuse and addiction so i dont think the doc will perscribe it. Anything else good for anxiety?
Take care everyone and thanks for reading
Chris :)

Hey Chris,
how are you? i'm a bad example, i take klonopin, and have an alcohol abuse history, but i have used a natural supplement, {theanine] which raises gaba and to a lesser extent dopamine, and actually is very calming, much like a benzo. it is naturally in green tea, and can help people who drink caffiene relax,it mellows the effect. also magnesium, [i take magnesuim taurate]can be helpful!!i hope this post doen't get redirected to alternative, lol, but these are good benzo substitutes!! good luck my friend....john

There is actually some very calming stuff right at your health food store that can allow you to reduce your benzo dose a lot and fast, and wean off of it relatively quickly as well. Worst case scenario you stay on it, but can do fine with much less.
When I was on xanax, I was able to immediately cut my dose in half when I started supplementing with glycine...and it was just the glycine in a magnesium glycinate supplement. Magnesium itself, especially taurate or glycinate, is good. Any supplement with a combination of gaba, glycine, and taurine is good. Some of them have inositol too which is a nice add on.
Of them all, I found glycine particularly calming. Theanine is supposed to be calming, but I swear when I tried it I got very anxious...it also makes more dopamine as well as gaba...and for me the dopamine part of it was too strong.
Just boost the natural inhibitory chemicals in your body with concentrated foods (amino acids) like glycine, taurine, gaba, maybe inositol, and you could find it easier than you thought.
