A few days ago, as I was still on lexapro, the weirdest thing happened.
I felt a "zap" in my brain. The zap was so strong that I jumped. At first, I was excited because I thought that maybe my chemicals were lining up.
What is a "brain zap?" Is it med related?

Hello Lynn (again!)
Brain zaps are med related. They are very common, particulary on Effexor. I got them too - they are very weird! You get them when you are withdrawing from meds. They are scary but harmless (or so the docs think) Are you switching meds at the moment? It is best to taper off one, and then taper onto the new one, although some GPs (normal docs) aren't really aware of this, particulary here in the UK, but thats another story!
:o)

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was on lexapro, then zoloft for a week, then back on lexapro. Now I am on buspar and effexor. I started the new meds. yesterday and I am already starting to feel better.
Hey, I wrote back to you in the thread above.
Thanks,
Lynn

Lynn,
I also experienced the brain zappers.
Mine started several days after I totally stopped Lexapro and continued for about a month.
They weren't every day though- just periodic. It was very, very weird.
Like a bolt of electricity shooting through my brain!
It will go away- in my mind, I just pictured it as if the furniture was being rearranged up there. LOL

Can you have a "brain zap" while not being on meds? From people's descriptions it sounds like something I used to get a lot growing up. I'm curious about what it is.

It felt like electricty just jolted through my brain. I jumped when it happened. I read somewhere that it is not dangerous.

When I got them from stopping paxil everytime I turned my head ever slightly made me feel momentarily like I would faint. At the time the doctor told me to take it again. And that did it they went away. That's when I learned about tappering meds. Fondly, Phillipa

i got those all the time when switching around meds. i also noticed on some SSRI's that if i missed a day or on some even half a day before remembering a dose i would get them. it seems very med related.
This is the end of the thread.
