It's actually an MAOI -- Monoamine oxydase inhibitor. That's the first class of anti-depressants -- Nardil, Parnate, etc. To take them, you have to avoid eating certain foods, and risk blood pressure changes -- both hyper and hypo. (The hypertensive crisis, which can be brought on by eating the wrong things, is the most serious, but the hypotension is actually more common.)
Lexapro is an SSRI -- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. It's one of the newest of the ADs.

NO,youre maois currently are Parnate/Nardil.You have one a few others but they are not maintstream,i.e deprenyl/moclimide.
The most potent two are parnate/nardil.
In a nutshell with out getting technical,where a ssris is selective on serotion in the brain,maois are not,they create a build up of most of the chemicals,serotion,noradrenaline,and dopamine.
Unfrotnatly they also let other chemicals build up as well,including one called tyramine,this is the worry about them,tyramine if built up too excess levels can be dangerous.For this reason people on maois have to keep there intake of tyramine on watch,this means certain foods very rich in tyramine,soy sauce for example or a no no.
Certain people on maois wont have a issue regardless,but everyone will notice there own no no`s,for me soy sauce is really the only one if i eat ill have a bad reaction.But because maois are not selective,and raise numerous chemicals opposed to one or two,they for some people are more therputic.
Nardil unlike parnate even raises gaba.
