I am taking this combination as well - it's working for me! I have found that Cymbalta is weight neutral; however up to this point I've gained 20lbs from previous medications I've been on, and the weight is not budging, no matter what my change in lifestyle - diet, exercise.
So it's a mixed blessing for me. Working on my depression, yes. Allowing me to return to my desired weight, not possible for me! I'm trying to be content with the mental benefits and table my weight loss wishes for further down the line.Good luck,
ClearSkies

Have been on zoloft, 50, could not deal with the yawning and the clenching of the jaw, been on effexor went on an eating binge.....ana's cannot handle that.the i have been on tripetal, headaches severe, i am on lamicital 75, i am sure he will raise it come wednesday i have been on 150, with no improvement, but it is weight nuetral, lets see, i have been on lexapro, hated it, i think maybe my serotinin is ok and when they put me on ssri's it is like a overload? does that make any sense? maybe i need a mood stabilizer, because i am moody.....but most all pack on the pounds and that risk i am not willing to take.......oh and topamax 150

Yes, makes sense about the seratonin. If I take anything that touches my seratonin, I get worse not better.
So obviously seratonin is not my problem either.
I'm wondering if you've tried something like Klonopin? My main problem was anxiety that then created depression (or worsening of it). Since i've been taking Klonopin faithfully ( once in morning and at night) I have seen HUGE changes in me; my moods are MUCH better. I feel "nicer" and calmer... not drugged or drowsy, but "normal."

I don't have any specific info on this med, but I wanted to throw a few things out there in case they might help. I don't mean this to come off as rude or anything.
First, do you have a good pdoc that you can trust? Does s/he know your history and fears abt meds? Are you both in agreement that meds are the best option for you? Taking meds and their side effects can be very difficult for folks who don't have ED's, but even worse for those that do. You need someone who has compassion, understanding, and patience. A judgemental doc (not that yours necessarily is) who is trying to force you into something that you don't want just won't help.
Also, do you have a therapist? What does s/he have to say? Anything helpful on this topic?
And the other really important reason to have a pdoc and a t that you can trust is that they can be very helpful in being a "reality check." For example, what might seem like an out of control eating binge to you, might seem like normal eating to other people. If you are still below a healthy weight, gaining weight might just be a sign that you are getting better, not a problematic side effect. Are any of these a possibilty for you? They may not be. In that case, maybe they will help someone else who is reading.
I hope you find good support here and IRL.
Best,
EE

Spriggy, thats the only one i forgot to mention i take klonopin 2 mgs 2x a day i have tried or should i say used to take it 3 xs a day 1mg, but that stopped working, have been on it for 3 yrs now.
Emily, well maybe some of what u say is true, but the thing with the ad is true, and BTW i love my dr, he is there when i need him at the drop of a hat, when you give someone with an ed a drug thats going to put weight on it does more harm then good....unfortunatley. and yes he knows about my fear of any drug he can name it i can tell u what the effects are on weight.now i have an appt with him on wed, thought it was today.....but anyway i was thinking i did like the cymbalta and i really had no side effects except by day 4 could not get up on 20 mgs, and i have 5 kids i need to be able to function, so what about cymbalta with like provigil, to take away the effects of the extreme tiredness of the cymbalta? hey i am looking for ideas i do know i need somwthing , and to answer your question yes i see an ED specialtist 2x a week and my reg dr everyother week, which i am hoping to chnage to once a mth today see if he goes for it....
thanks Denise

I've been on Cymbalta for 2 months now and have not gained any weight. Woohoo!
I took Effexor for 5 months last year and gained 20 pounds, even though I was eating the same way.

I've actually dropped the Provigil now, because it was having a negative effect on my mood -- and, ironically, I don't feel nearly as wiped out now as when I was taking it! On it, I needed a daily nap, now I mostly don't. Go figure?
Anyway, I've read your other posts, too, and will suggest staying away from SSRIs because some research says you're absolutely right about the over abundance of serotonin. Walter Kaye at UPMC did a study trying to show that a serotonin deficit was involved in AN. Turns out he couldn't -- but he did find an overabundance of it, which seems to predate the onset of AN, and may be part (or all) of the cause of it. That would go a long way towards explaining why so many with AN do so poorly on SSRIs.
Cymbalta has been pretty low key for me, although it did kinda wipe me out for a while. Most of the effects I had from it at first changed after about three weeks or so, so if you can manage to get through the first couple of weeks, you'll get a better idea of whether it wants to make friends with you.
Adding Provigil to it might be a good solution for you, too, since it would help counter the tiredness at first.
Sorry -- I just got into a hurry (never answer the telephone), so I can't finish this.

Thanks for the reply, i never felt ok with the ssri's, so maybe that is why, wish i could get a copy of that study....i will do a search... so for now i think i will stay on the lamicital, which i am positive i will be going up tomorrow, just wish there was something else.....that did not put on the weight.... bc there is no way if i was that tired the other day and had 5 kids to watch one with a fever, and i could not get up at all, (so not like me, up at 4am and running), and she was outside with a fever with no shoes or jacket......and i could not move, thats why he made me come off it, but to be honest except for the extreme drowsiness i was feeling ok, but hungry.....and that is a hard thing to deal with for me not ready for that yet...one thing at a time.....and then they say wellbutrin u cannot take if u have a ED...ok seizures, but what exactly are the risks 1in 100? 1in 1000? 1 in never? is it worth the risk?
