I've been on Nardil for 18 days and I feel pretty good. It hasn't kicked in yet, but I'm sure it will be around 4-6 weeks before it does. Also, I'm only on 30mg until I see my doctor next week.
I was wondering if anyone has had these side effects:
1) Sore jaw muscles/stiffness. It hurts to speak
2) I can feel little twitches in my cheeck but they cannot be seen. It feels like a nerve just pulsates and twitches. very weird. Are these common and, if so, do they go away during treatment? My face feels really weird and I'm afraid I'm getting TD. Nardil COMMON side effects include: tremors, twitching, and myoclonic movements and these tend to go away after a few weeks/months so maybe this will go away too?
I get OCD when little things happen and start researching all the bad things it could be...........

Ok. After looking at old posts about jaw clenching/tightness/trembling, it seems to be a common side effect of SSRI's (don't know about nardil) and supposedly goes away or lessens as time goes on. It's making me mad because I feel fine, but I'm afraid to talk to people bc my jaw hurts so much and I don't want to keep rubbing it in front of people.
Can someone else help me out with the other side effects that I posted initially? I really need some stories. I see my doctor in another week. I want to know about this electric shock-like twitch around the bridge of my nose and cheek!

I was told Buspar can help with the jaw-clenching.

CKl you sounded better to me and more upbeat before you started the nardil. I do how it works for you. Have you ever thought about desensitization for social anxiety? Fondly, Phillipa

I don't think desensitization would work for me. My anxiety is all-encompassing, not just social anxiety. I would bet it's similar to your anxiety, except with a more social anxiety component. It needs to be medicated for me to feel well. When meds are working, I feel great, but when meds aren't working (or give me esoteric, strange side effects), I'm better off without them.
Right now, on Nardil, I'm experiencing these two weird side effects and no real benefit (too early to tell) so, yes, being off Nardil would be better. No one has replied to my post so I'm thinking no one else has ever heard of these side effects! I'm getting scared but will stick with it until my appt next Tuesday!
Thanks Philippa for caring! You're great!

Hi CK
I just sent you a babblemail.
Basically, I wouldn't worry too much. I dont mean to belittle the side effects or your concern of them, but Nardil is simply 'prone' to all sorts of WIERD effects. Its a potent drug in its actions and has very wide-spread effects throughout the body but your body will adjust with time.Best of luck,
teck.

Thanks Teck! Yea, my doctor said to take some pain meds for the jaw clenching and said not to worry..it will go away. I'm gonna fight it out for another few weeks. The number one reason meds don't work is quitting too early and start-up effects ALWAYS are hard for me.

Please, man, STICK WITH IT. Seven months later it seems like my sexual functioning is starting to return to normal. I no longer have ANY side effects except for sexual dysfunction, insomnia, and water retention (easily treated wtih hydrochlorothiazide).
No orthostatic hypotension, drowsiness, weakness, urinary retention, constipation, etc. Myoclonic jerks seem to be going away too. I am glad I decided to spin the wheel and continue with Naridl instead of going back to Parnate long-term. Benefits seem to keep accruing, and side effects seem to keep going away, albeit EXTREMELY slowly. But I was ill for what, 10+ years in some capacity? I think I can wait ...

Ok...I'm afraid. I've never posted this much in one day!
1) My mouth feels strange
2) lips are quivering
3) extreme difficulty speaking
4) Need to chew gum for my mouth to feel normal
5) Jaw clenching/teeth grinding
6) lips go numb
7) electrical twitch at the bridge of my nose and cheek -- sort of like a pulseIncreased anxiety from SSRI's is a problem for me, but I know how common it is for this to occur. These side effects that are affected my face (something I care about!!!) are really scaring me AND I've searched the board for these side effects and can't find ONE post of someone with similar problems leading me to believe I'm having some seriously uncommon side effects. It's basically Parkinsons-like symptoms and I'm 21.
I can deal with the hypotension, insomnia, tiredness, lethargy, anorgasmia (which have since gone away), but anything that affects my face and my ability to form words scares me to death.
How can I know if these side effects go away if no one has ever had them? The reason I didn't care too much about the hypotension was bc people said it would go away and it did.
I'm seeing my doctor in 8 more days and don't know if I can deal with this until then. I've already called him twice and I don't want to call him again. I should have scheduled appts once a week when I started this instead of once a month.People have told me to stick with it and that "side effects" go away with time but no one has had my side effects so I don't know if these will go away. I'm scared because I'm developing TD and Parkinsons-like symptoms and I don't want it to progress any further. The longer you stay on a drug that's causing these, the more chance for it to become permanent?
Someone please lend some support. I've never been this scared from side effects. I recognize Nardil's awesome potential but, again, I'm scared.
Even when I'm anxious, I talk to people, but, now, with these symptoms, I'm avoiding everyone I know. It's just too hard to speak and form words. My mouth doesn't work correctly....

Hi CK1, that extreme difficulty speaking.........there have been posts about coordination, I recall one about problems walking. I wonder if there's a connection.
Why not lower the dose a little and wait for a bit (if you have the patience)? You can take more later.

All the smart people on this board -- please help
After doing some reading (and skipping a class to do it!), my symptoms go hand in hand with EPS symptoms.
The jaw clench/teeth grind/numb-trembling lips and tongue/facial twitches, etc.Are these serious side effects? Should I continue Nardil? Does anyone know anything about EPS?
I'm sorry -- I'm posting like 2000 times today but I need some answers quickly.

Hi CK,
Jaw clenching/grinding teeth is a common side effect of serotonergic drugs such as Nardil and the SSRIs.
>Need to chew gum for my mouth to feel normal
Dry mouth? A common side effect of Nardil.
>extreme difficulty speaking
Due to dry mouth?
There have been reports of stuttering/repeating words with Nardil.
>EPS
I wouldn't call any of your symptoms EPS.
Kind regards
Ed

After 19 days, I'm going to have to throw in the towel on my Nardil trial. I cannot tolerate the side effects.

A small dose of a benzodiazepine perhaps could have mediated those symptoms, although a lot of it sounded to me (who is not a doctor) like what I've observed in those who were dosed beyond 2mg/kg on MDMA, e.g. too much serotonergic activity.

Hi CK,
Why not reduce the dose to 15mg and continue for a few weeks? Some people are very sensitive to certain drugs and require unusually low doses.

ed, ck1 maybe a good idea. I had antidepressive response with minimal dosage of trazodone. But of course these are two totally different drugs.

Thanks for the help everyone. Yes, I'm VERY med sensitive. 10mg of Paxil worked for me even though that isn't that low. I get side effects from every med, but these side effects really scared me so I'm getting off.
My new pdoc is *sure* that I'm bipolar II (that's a story that I haven't posted) and I've only tried SSRI's by themselves (+Nardil) and he really wants to get me on a mood stabilizer or an antipyschotic + SSRI, but I'm too afriad of TD with AP's so I'd like to try some stabilizers first. He's a very firm doctor and doesn't really let me tell him what to do -- something that's good for me! I BEGGED him to let me try Nardil and he said "It won't work" "AD's are not the answer for you" and I guess I should have listened. It might have worked, I just couldn't handle the powerful side effects. They were (and ARE) much worse than you may think (I'll give them to you and let you see for yourself :) My mouth still feels so STIFF and my lips hurt/are numb/ and feel totally weird. It hurts to speak and my mouth is so stiff I have a hard time forming words. I'm sorry, I might be a "baby" but I just couldn't deal. Thanks again guys!

Ck1, there are solutions. We are all sufferers in this forum here. Maybe genetically, difficult childhood, physical disabled or whatever.Life means generally suffering(IMHO). You are not alone.
