Does Nardil alias Phenelezine interact badly with Cod Liver Oil? Anything else that I have not mentioned below? For example, frozen foods?
* The only ones I know to avoid are - and my personal interactions, noted below, ARE NOT APPLICABLE TO OTHER PEOPLE NECESSARILY - BE CAREFUL! - :
* fermented yeast foods, cured (or not fresh) meats (including salami sausage genre and pate), broad beans, fish all types), cheese (except cream and cottage), various medications;
* too much chocolate & caffeine, avacado and bananas don't seem to worry me, though sometimes an overdose of chocolate does);
* lager, rose and red wine, in that order of least to worst interaction, only do so minimally in me, if I drink them over short periods (lager isn't so bad on me over longer periods either, though I do feel better booze free) and alcohol tends to go to my head quite quickly on Nardil;
* WHITE WINE has a terrible effect on me!!!

You have it pretty much spot on. But one to certainly add is Liver. The one food reaction I've had with Nardil was Lambs Liver. I'm sure I ate it a few times without problems. I couldn't recall ever reading that it was a no-go. Still, I thought I'd die! I had a fire in my stomache and a Jackhammer in my head! Very scary!
So I'd avoid all offal too.Fish/Cod Liver Oil is fine though, I take it every day myself. Dont worry too much about Yeast Extract content of sauces or packaged meals, unless they're particularly rich. A small amount of gravy seems fine to me too. Its the pure Marmite and Oxo thick syrup that you need to watch. Also avoid Soy sauce, but Soya milk and all types yogurt are fine. And some cheeses are ok too: processed (Craft slices, etc), cream cheese, cottage cheese, though you'd need to read up and double check which ones.
Cheers.

Hi Phillipa
I'm afraid I haven't really looked into the patch much. However, I think that the Tyramine food reaction caused by 'ingested' MAOIs has something to do with Tyramine in the stomache and its effect on noradrenaline & adrenaline (norepinephrine & epinephrine). A patch is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream completely bypassing the gut where the tyramine reaction normally originates. (?)
"R. Tyramine, is an amino acid which is found in various foods, and is an indirect sympathomimetic that can cause a hypertensive reaction in patients receiving MAOI therapy. Monoamine oxidase is found in the gastrointestinal tract and inactivates tyramine; when drugs prevent the catabolism of exogenous tyramine, this amino acid is absorbed and displaces norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve ending and epinephrine from the adrenal glands. If a sufficient amount of pressor amines are released, a patient may experience a severe occipital or temporal headache, diaphoresis, mydriasis, nuchal rigidity, palpitations, and the elevation of both diastolic and systolic blood pressure may ensue (Anon, 1989; Da Prada et al, 1988; Brown & Bryant, 1988)."

tech, that was extremly informative. I sincerely appreciate the information. The longer I stay on the board the more posts I see about nardil or parnate. There really must be something to it for so many people to be on these meds. Thanks again tech, Fondly, Phillipa

I eat ricotta and mozzarella cheese, also provolone without a problem. Even do okay with goat cheese.
