hormones and ADs

Is it possible for certain antidepressants to cover up symptoms of adrenal insufficiency or hypothyroidism?
Thanks.

A simple blood test would reviel if your thyroid is functioning as it should. Fondly, Phillipa

I really don't think an AD would mask the symptoms of hormone deficiency. In fact if you have a hormone deficiency, the ADs usually don't work as well. Men who are hypogonadal don't respond to regular antidepressants. Hormone replacement is essential if there is a proven, abnormal deficiency. I have two proven hormone deficiencies and the hormones have done what no AD could: get me staying awake all day. Like Phillipa says, get your hormones tested ASAP if there is a question about it and don't hesitate to replace them if a deficiency is proven.

Psychiatrists sometimes confuse hormonal illnesses for major psychiatric illnesses. A lot of hypothyroid people are depressed and anxious. I found that with Synthroid a lot of my anxiety just melted away. And, depression--what depression? I am scheduled to go off my AD in a few months.

Hypothroidism is not your hormones. It's a little gland in your neck. Some people get autoimmune diseases of the thyroid. I have Hasimotos thyroiditis. It can make some people tired and it did the oppossite with me made me very anxious and then I became depressed. Amd this is with the addition of synthroid. I think a saliva test is the only accurate way to test hormones. At least in women. But a blood test can tell what you're FSH is. That only indicates if you are going through menopause. Hypothyroidism is a deficiency of thyroid hormone. The thyroid is part of the endocrine system. That's why my endocrinologist (hormone doctor) treats my hypothyroidism. You are correct about Hashimoto's being an autoimmune disease.

From http://www.synthroid.com/patientinfo/menu0.jsp

"...hypothyroidism – a condition where your body’s thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone"

Thank you, Phillipa and xjs7

I hope you both find the right hormonal balance which will clear up your symptoms.

Shelley.
