Hey folks,
Sorry I have been away for a while, I have been in the process of moving and starting a new job etc. I hope everyone else has been okay. Anyway.
I have been itching all over and coming out in red bumps....I first thought I was allergic to the sheets (I am staying at my Dad's) and thought that he might have washed them in something I wasn't used to.
Well, now I know that its the wellbutrin - from searching these pages. Great. I finally find a med that doesn't make me sleepy, asexual etc and actually lets me concentrate, and now I'm coming out in bumps and I can't stop itching.
So....do you continue with the wellbutrin and hope the itching/bumps go away, or stop immediately like some posts suggest?
I'm actually on Zyban (another form of wellbutrin) 150mg once daily - I've been on it for the last three weeks.
Please help!!!!! I'm kinda scared and get panic attacks about anything to do with my health.....so any help you really be nice!
Meri

Standard answer call your doc or the ER since you may not have one yet. And Benydryl in the meantime if you are in such distress. I wonder if there is a difference in zyban and wellbutrin even if they say it's the same drug. Fondly, Phillipa

>My doc told me and i verified this with a pharmacist, that the chemical make-up is a bit different so i wld. ask ur doc about switching to non generic. I told my doc i do not like generic as i have had the same exp. as u. I am allergic to sulfa and was given a generic ?? years ago for a baseball injury and i had little red itchy bumps. The pharmacist broke each chemical down and in the generic was a form of sulfa that was not in the name brand?! Weird but possible! Hope u feel better ; (

I have stopped taking wellbutin because I got rashes and I couldn't stop itching all over. The doc advised that I should start up the wellbutrin again after a couple of weeks to allow the itching/rashes to go away completely.
My question is - will these side effects (the itching and rashes) go away after awhile on the wellbutrin or are they there to stay?
I really like wellbutrin, and I would hate to stop it. Also I'm in the UK, so getting wellbutrin in the first place was a mission and GPs here won't prescribe anything other than celexa, effexor or prozac.

No offence, but your doctor is not quite there. If your rash started once you began the Wellbutrin then you are allergic to it. He probably wants to see if it was the Wellbutrin. I say let him play guinea pig on someone else. I bet your chemist wouldn't advise you to try it again. Your reaction could be worse the next time you try the Wellbutrin.
Anyhow, that is my two cents. I hope it goes away soon. Try having a bath with baking soda in it. That should help. :-)
Maxime
PS - how soon did the rash start after taking the Wellbutrin?

I used to get terrible itching and hot skin when I went up on ssri's. My pdoc prescribed an antihistamine and it helped. For me they would die down gradually as my body got used to the med. I also took oatmeal baths to soothe the skin. Hope this helps,

No worries, GPs in the UK are notorious for being completely clueless. All mine have! I wasn't sure about the recommendation either.

Yes, this is what the doc wanted to do. Although it started up after about 2-3 weeks, and itching and rashes are listed in the common side effects.
I say let him play guinea pig on someone else. I bet your chemist wouldn't advise you to try it again. Your reaction could be worse the next time you try the Wellbutrin.
Actually, I saw the chemist, and she hadn't seen this effect in any of her patients. But then again, in the UK its only prescribed as a smoking cessation aid. She recommended some anti-itching cream and er, thats about it.

Thing is, I actually like this med, and it really helps me concentrate, something I just can't seem to do otherwise.
The Doc actually suggested I try St John's wort....I might try this, although I think that its time I got myself a private pdoc. Or at least a referal to a NHS pdoc, although, again, I have heard that these are useless.

Sorry you're having so much trouble with a med you feel good about. But it does sound like an allergy to the med. Wonder if a dermatologist could help decipher the cause? Just a thought. Fondly, Phillipa

Gosh, I'd be a little reluctant to try it again. There are so many meds out there, why take one that you are allergic to? Are there other meds that you would consider? Could p-babblers help you brainstorm?
Best,
EE

I'm on WB and had hives and a itching real bad, come to find out I was allergic to the generic brand. I guess they use different fillers. My doc switched me to name brand and next day itching was gone.
Are you on generic?
