We have much going on in our lives' right now (stressors) which to my body= no sleep!
I have weaned nearly off of Restoril and really don't want to jump back on that stuff (it has taken me 4 months to get off of it).
Anyway, I have 5 samples for Ambien- I am considering taking one tonight but am worried about side effects.
I want to go to sleep- not feel drowsy, foggy headed or weird. Some sleepings meds do that to me (melatonin really wigged me out!).Anyway, any thoughts? I know some of you have success with it.
How long after I take it will it knock me out?

I have really had success w/ it. No s/e's that I have noticed either. It knocks you out very quickly. 10 minutes, maybe?
I would heed the comercial's warning though--take it only when you have enough time to sleep, like, 8 hrs. In my experience, if you do that, you'll be good to go in the AM.
I also like Ambien b/c it gives me a good night's sleep and so I feel less anxious the next day. I hope it works as well for you. I've often joked that I'm going to name my 1st child "Ambien." ;)

I haven't noticed any side effects, just makes me sleepy. It doesn't really knock me out though. No drowsiness the next day at all for me, it has a short half life.
Don't drink alchohol when you take it though!

Says that if you take too early, you'll wake up on the bathroom floor with a toothbrush in your mouth! I laughed when he said that.
It's been a great friend to me. Again, as everyone has said, don't take it if you don't have time for it. A couple of times, I've taken it after discovering that I can't sleep -- say, around 1 AM -- and regretted it when I couldn't drag myself out of bed without whining a lot the next morning. If I feel as though I'll need it, I take it before bed.
It usually knocks me out pretty quickly. I read a few pages of a book before bed most nights, and after taking Ambien it's a very short read.
One thing to watch out for, though, is that if you take it and then have to stay awake for any reason, it has a reputation for being pretty trippy. Not necessarily in a good way. Dr CattleProd was telling me about his experience when he'd taken it and then gotten an emergency page. Said that he was sick all over the floor, doesn't remember cleaning it up, and felt very "trippy." I haven't experienced that, but then I try to make sure I don't take it often, just in case...

Spriggy knowing your sensitivity to meds, I'd have to say that I wouldn't worry too much about ambien. Take half the first night and see how you feel. Know the big day is coming Sunday and I'll pray for you! Fondly, Phillipa

Even a 1/2 of a 5mg. will help you fall asleep. I agree with all above info posted. If I stayed up to watch tv after I'd take it, then I was up all night, but stoned. So take it and get your butt right into bed!
I weaned myself off just because I'd been on it so long. Still don't have much trouble getting to sleep; it 'trained' me to go right to sleep once I'm in bed.

Okay, that sounds kind of sad...
But after the first couple nights taking it, I could not believe how great I slept and how much better I felt in the a.m.
For the first time I can remember, I could not "remember" sleeping! No dreams, no waking up in the night, etc...all the things that usually gave me some kind of memory of sleeping. Nothing. Just sleep. Beautiful, lovely, fabulous, opulent sleep.
Love it.
BUT, as Racer said...it would be nice if I could take it at say, 2:30 a.m. when I realize I need it. Even taking a half tab at that point makes it hard to get up the next day at my normal time. I usually try a cup of chammomile tea when that happens.

LOL! YOur post was funny. I would have said the same thing: "Okay, that sounds kind of sad." Seriously, I loved Ambien, I have it waiting at my pharmacy, but am afraid of getting addicted to it, the sad thing is, is that I got severely addicted to Xanax and Vicodin, yet now I am afraid to even take these meds anymore - very strange. Ambien is awesome - good sleep, little side effects, and get your pillows ready :)
