I take an SSRI and it seems if I have even one drink the medication does not work and I have to ramp up again. Does anyone else experience this. And is there anyway I can help my system so I can drink socially, even on occasion.

Interesting that you noticed this. The very first AD I ever took was paxil l0mg. And the only way I was able to take it was drinking 4-6 beers at night. I've heard alchohol negates an Ad's effects so maybe that's why the beer helped me so much. Maybe it kept the paxil from working but I really felt good. Second time around on paxil it didn't work and I wasn't dringking then. HUMMMMM Fondly, Phillipa

i dont know - but i took prozac for a year 12-ish? years ago and drank wine every night - maybe it negated effects - dont know - dont really remember the prozac doing anything (except being all hell to stop taking) - since those 11 years and SSRI -free, i have found wine to be the best 'ssri' i know of! ;)

Maddy4, Now that's interesting. Since my pdoc told me not to drink I haven't had any fun. Won't go to restaurants, parties, social gathering. So maybe drinking is the best antidepressant. That's what they used until meds came out. And now all the pharmacitical companies want our money. Maybe drinking is the answer. It certainly is cheaper. And much more fun. No side effects or withdrawal and no hangover if you know your limits. Fondly, Phillipa

ALSO - why is alcohol considered 'self medicating' and popping an SSRI is not???? is it b.c drug co's make no money when you buy a case of wine? i dont get the double standard...i suppose it is b/c generally people popping SSRI's are seeing someone who oversees it - but hello - i got free samples of lex from my OB and i am tripping - wine worked much better.

Maddy, I agree. If you feel good and function in the morning and all day I think it's knowing you can enjoy that wine at night. No I wouldn't advise drinking during the day. Then you'd be on substance abuse board. Fondly, Phillipa

try a different drink, like mixed drink instead of beer.
perhaps what you have been drinking is just not mixing well with your overall body chemistry. so try something else. ive been through this before.

I have found it ok to drink on SSRI's except for Aropax (paxil) which sent me beserk and rip the kitchen apart and Luvox which made me have bowel evacuations in inappropriate places (he he) and have to race home and change. But it was ok for me to have a few on prozac, cipramil(celexa) and effexor xr.
