Effexor xr- the sides...Help

Posted by jtro_32 on September 18, 2005, at 23:57:26

I am new to this site and thank all of you for the effexor posts, theyre great. I began taking effexor 2 weeks ago and I am not sure sure about the results just yet. My doctor started me at 37.5 for the first week then 75 on the second week then 150mg from the third on until I go back to see her. I think I feel a little better, I know for sure I feel like getting up everyday and have more energy to work. I have some side effects that do not really bother me just yet- mild nausea, slight dizziness occasionally, and hyperactivity. I have only noticed one side effect that really concerns me now and thats the fact that I cannot have an orgasm. I have a wonderful, supportive fiance that went through hell to get me to go to a doctor about my depression and now I dont want for our sex life to be in danger of creating more problems. What I need to know is did I just trade one bad for another or will this side effect eventually get better? Is there anything else the doctor can give me to help with this side effect? Thank you all for your help.

Can't help with experience but they say wellbutrin helps with sexual side effects and more energy. Fondly, Phillipa

I went through this, too, on Effexor. One option is Wellbutrin, but that seems premature. What worked well for me was an old-fashioned anti-histimine called cyproheptidine. You can't take it every day, because it blocks the action of the Effexor on serotonin, but if you're talking about sex three or four times a week, it should be worth a try. Ask your doctor about it -- brand name is Periactin -- and see if she's willing to try it out.

My experience with this has been that some doctors know about it, but even those who don't are generally willing to prescribe it on request. It's a pretty benign drug, although most of its uses these days are things like sexual side effects from drugs, or appetite stimulation in cancer patients, etc. (I have a prescription myself, but so does my cat. {shrug} Nice to know we can share...) Don't let the appetite stimulation bug you, by the way: if you're taking it for the sexual side effects, it's not likely to be a problem.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I have read some threads that say that. I am definately going to wait it out and see however I am open to all suggestions.

Your start-up experience with Effexor sounds a lot like mine. I had difficulty with orgasm for several months and then things got better. I also added Klonopin to the Effexor and that made things even better in that department. Wellbutrin did not help me at all in that respect when I tried for several weeks with the Effexor. Effexor is a great drug for me. I've been on it for about 1.5 years and can't imagine going back to how I was before it. Good luck!

Colleen

Just started the 150mg/day and things are no better. Giving it time and trying not to let this become another source of stress and depression, I cannon stand it. I love what effexor is doing for me with the exception of the sexual side effects. Wonder how I made it so long without. Thank you all for your posts and I will keep you informed on my situation. I will be heading back to the doc in a few more weeks and will definately mention these unwanted sides and possibly some of your remedies.
