I am quiting the prozac.

Posted by lynn970 on September 14, 2005, at 19:31:44

I think that prozac is causing anxiety. I feel like quiting the prozac before I even talk to a doctor.

I know SSRI's made my anxiety worse as well Lynn.

But if you do quit, I would go very slowly. Quitting cold turkey landed me in the mental ward.

My gyn doc. mentioned lexapro. Maybe I should call him and ask to switch. I do not have a p doc. I wonder if I need to get one.

I had been on 20 mg. Prozac for 15 years and it quit working. I asked my pdoc to put me on 40 mg. and he said no because it might cause anxiety. So, he put me on Cymbalta. I was on 40 mg. years ago and it made me nervous and jumpy. The 20 mg. dosage didn't do that.

So the 40 mg can cause anxiety? I tried cymbalta a few months ago. I had to get off because I had so much pain in my wrists and ankles. I could hardly walk.

Lexapro cld. work better for u than prozac?? it's worth a try but does the doc u see know ur main symptoms include anxiety? there are other meds that help anxiety, not just depression. and yes, dropping to 20 mg wld help the withdrawal effects. I wld. def. find a p doc that specializes in anxiety/depression. therapy works well for some people as well. hang in there lynn!

You said you quit SSRI's cold turkey. How much were you taking, and for how long?

Thanks

I was on 10 mg's of Lexapro for around 3 weeks- I had a few visual hallucinations and suddenly felt suicidal, so I went down to 5 mg's for about another month.

Then I think for just a couple days, I bit the 5 in half and then just stopped cold turkey.

It's hard to describe what I went through after I quit but I felt like my entire central nervous system whacked out; I felt dizzy, had brain zaps, sounds were much louder, colors were too bright, etc.. It was weird.

It took me months to feel "normal" (at least *my* normal) again. That was the worst experience of my life.

Prozac has a long half life go slow but it's relatively easy to get off. Fondly, Phillipa

From my experience in trying many SSRI's, some tend to be calming, while others are stimulating. They actually used different terms than those in the literature I've read on the subject (I can't remember what they were), but thats how I understood it. Prozac has been the most stimulating for me, which is what I needed for my hard to treat depression. Wellbutrin is even more so. Paxil and Lexapro were the most calming, which in my circumstance made me feel terrible.

Of course, meds can work differently on different people, and you can have side effects that go away eventually. It seems like I initially felt jittery on Prozac, but it settled down after a few weeks.

So basically, it depends on if you can stand it long enough to see if it goes away. It seems like my doc gave me Xanax for the initial jitters, but they can be really stingy about that med because it can be addictive. I take it on an as needed basis now and that works fine for me. Some docs wouldn't go for that though.

Oh, and I've found going to a pdoc instead of a family doc to be the best thing I've ever done. They're just alot more knowledgable.
