Wellbutrin - how long does it take to kick in?

Posted by peacetoy on September 14, 2005, at 6:24:07

Hi, I'd like some feedback on how long to give Wellbutrin to kick in (actually Zyban, as I'm in the UK and its only licensed for stopping smoking - but I've got it anyway).

I started 11 days ago at 150mg slow release, going up to 300mg/day for the last 5 days.

I'm also taking 40mg fluoxetine and 5mg Zyprexa. That combination worked well, but then stopped working after 4 weeks, and I'm pretty much back in the abyss....

The Wellbutrin was added both to see if it would counteract the libido-crushing effects of the fluoxetine and for the AD effect.

I'm very impatient for some results on both those fronts, but haven't felt evidence of either. In fact today, I've got a constant feeling of impending doom - very unpleasant, and I wonder if it could be anxiety from the Wellbutrin (although its probably the illness not responding to the meds....

In my experience, it kicked in very quickly (24hrs). The first time I took it, it made me a little silly and happy. I tried to take it a 2nd time, but it made me so anxious I had to stop after 2 doses. :(

Maybe it is a good sign though that you don't have side effects from the WB. Perhaps you need a higher dose? I don't know what the max dose is for WB, but someone else here should know.

Best,
EE

Hey hey hey!

I'm in the UK too and my GP has prescribed, well I convinced him to let me try zyban/wellbutrin for its AD properties. Actually if I'm brutally honest, I wanted it for its weight loss properties and its effect on ADD symptoms - I am pretty sure I have ADD, (and I realise, its making me underachieve drastically) so I thought wellbutrin would be one of the easier ADD drugs to get my hands on - I hardly think they will let me try Ritalin!!!

Plus I haven't really had much success with the SSRIs....
Prozac - just went crazy on it;
Effexor - okay I suppose (from what I remember);
Celexa - constant fatigue;
reboxetine - okay but gave me acne :o( and my periods stopped. But I ate anything I wanted and didn't gain a gram!
And now wellbutrin - hopefully this will do something.

Although I am only on Day 4 at 150mg/day. hmmm can't say I have noticed anything to be honest!

Its part of my strategy - I'm moving this weekend, so I needed my nice amenable GP in this part of the country to prescribe me something another GP probably wouldn't....it'll be easier going to a new GP and saying that I'm on it already. Anyway........

I think, long term, I'll have to augument the zyban with something else. Any ideas?

Anyway, take care

Meri

EE, I've had a very similar experience with wellbutrin. If I take it for one day I get a stimulating AD effect, but it seems after that I either get no effect or feel slightly agitated/anxious.
