Seroquel v Zyprexa prn

Posted by needesp on September 14, 2005, at 0:34:24

My son has been prescribed Seroquel 100mgs to be taken prn if he feels suicidal/agitated/ocd running wild etc but it takes up to 1 or 1 1/2 hrs to work. I also think he may feel more depressed the next day (just an observation).

Does Zyprexa (if used prn) take as long to kick in and how long does it last? Also does it have an antidepressant effect?

Zyprexa can kick in immediately as far as certain effects. It should be taken at night from 6-9 PM because it seems to have sleep inducing properties. Most APs take a while to kick in as far as all their behavioral effects 4-6 weeks maybe, but there should be some initial effectivity also. This differs with the patient of course, 5 -10 mg is usually a good dosage for starters. Increased appetite is the usual side effect.

OOps prn usage! Sorry, disregard my previous post. Yes does have anti-depressive properties for some patients. Can cause major drowsiness about an hour or two after it is taken.

I think that the Zyprexa has been a much better PRN for me than Seroquel. I can feel it hit me and this occurs shortly after taking it. I do sometimes find myself having spells of drowsiness the day after. Sometimes it is best to experiment with the PRN meds to be able to choose the one that seems right for your son.
