Mixed state and thyroid

Posted by fires on September 7, 2005, at 14:45:13

I've been to the ER twice in the last 4 days because I'm in a mixed state with insomnia.

I get hot at times, and hyper with burning in the abdomen with lots of gas. Also headaches. The ER docs didn't check my thyroid blood levels. I've read that thyroid problems are common in rapid cycling mixed states.(BP hypomania-- I'm cycling very fast, yet not completely, if that makes sense).

My grandmother had thyroid problems. Should I insist that my pdoc order blood tests for thyroid hormones and antibodies. Just 2 hours ago I wouldn't be able to write this.

From what I know thyroid problems are common in a lot of psychiatric and mood disorders. i was amazed as a nurse to see in a pt chart all the pts on thyroid meds. Fondly, Phillipa

Seems like hypothyroidism gets the most attention, maybe more than it deserves.

Do you think so? That's when my problems began when my thyroid TSH went up so high. Fondly, Phillipa

So you basically have a primary thyroid disorder which led to secondary problems? Do you take thyroid hormone (s) now? (if you don't mind my asking).

My thyroid levels are low. I am on medicine. If your thyroid is off, it can mess up a lot of things.

Low thyroid symptoms: heavy period
cold all the time
low body temp.
fatigue
DEPRESSION
.... Just to name a few.

Many years ago, I took my body temp. (armpit) each morning before I got out of bed. It was always low according to:

Unfortunately I never benefited from thyroid supplementation.

In my opinion .. doc's don't know what else to do with the hyperactive thyroid, so they most always opt for the drastic .. like RAI (or whatever) that will put the patient into a permanent state of hypothyroidism. That is why you see so much "more" on hypO than hypEr. There are many people that are already out there just naturally as hypO.. but, even if you started out as hypEr, docs don't like you to stay "there" for long ...

Fires! Don't give up! Do your homework! Talk to your doc. I have discovered (the very hard way) that docs are not "God". Become very proactive in your healthcare and demand an alternative if previous thyroid supplementation did not work for you. There are MANY out there!

BTW .. the body temperature thing .. I found that to be very true ..

Good Luck! ~Flame~

I did my homework 22 years ago, and went to an endo. for about 3 years. My blood tests were always normal, my uptake scan was normal, as was my biopsy.

I didn't know what else to do.

I'm so proactive in my healthcare -- that some of my docs sometimes lose their patience with me. ;)

A few days ago I thought that my recent blood tests would show abnormalities, but now I'm not so sure. I'll find out Monday.

Here's a link to the endo. I saw back in the early 80's:
