Low dose Remeron for sleep

Posted by ed_uk on August 29, 2005, at 6:37:16

I've been taking ~ 3.75mg Remeron to help me sleep. It works well, better than Elavil. Higher doses make me groggy in the morning.

The 15mg SolTabs can be divided into 4 with a knife. I like the orange flavour.

The tablet disintegrated last night so I tried about 2mg. It worked. This drug is certainly a very potent antihistamine.

Hi Ed
So it feels like an antihistamine? Doesn't feel too bad or anything?

Hi Dec,

It doesn't feel bad at all, just very sleep inducing. I've never tried a high dose.

Hi Dec,

Mirtazapine (Remeron) is available as Avanza in Australia.

Ed - did you get the extreme munchies I've heard so much about?

>So it feels like an antihistamine?

It does....... but more sleep inducing. Unlike the sedative antihistamines, it's not anticholinergic.

It has a long duration of action and can keep you asleep throughout the night. For insomnia, I find that it's best taken as a low dose in the early evening to reduce the risk of hangover.

No, not at all but I only took a tiny dose.

Is it okay to take Remeron sporadically for insomnia?

Yes it's fine....... but it might be more convenient to take an extra dose of your hydroxyzine.

Hi again Dec,

I sent you a babblemail about the various sleep-inducing drugs available in Australia.

Hmmm well, I guess some people don't like it but I have found it useful so far at a very low dose :-)

Even a tiny dose of 2mg had me out like a light. The smallest tablet is 15mg.

Some people take up to 30mg for insomnia. I've never taken more that 7.5mg.

I was drowsy all day when I took 7.5mg. 3.75mg was preferable.

Amitriptyline, dothiepin, doxepin, trazodone and trimipramine are also useful for sleep.

Personally, I find mirtazapine more effective than amitriptyline or dothiepin. I've never tried doxepin, trimipramine or trazodone. Numerous babblers have had success with doxepin. Larry Hoover takes trimipramine. I don't think trazodone is available in Australia. Not sure about trimipramine. Amitriptyline, dothiepin, and doxepin are definitely available in Australia, as is mirtazapine.

Thanks Ed,
Noone seems to like Trazodone.
Priapism sounds alright in moderate amounts.
