Anyone heard of or been on Tofranil or Pamelor???

Posted by tjeffries on August 23, 2005, at 18:45:48

I have severe anxiety and cannot tolerate any of the SSRI's.... they were considering one of these two. What do you know about them or either of them, and if you took them what side effects did you experience? or did you find it to help and be effective? I need advice before I go to the dr. and help make a decision on this. any opinions or info. would be appreciated. thank you

nortriptyline (Pamelor) is an effective antidepressant. Side effects: drowsiness once you hit 40 mg or so (for me), which takes about two weeks to resolve. Orthostatic hypotension. Dry mouth, though less severe in my experience than Strattera or Provigil (this last has made me forget what saliva tastes like). Stay hydrated.

It's a slow titration process, but you may notice results within a week.

I've never taken either, but I found a link to info about Tofranil.

I tried Pamelor several years ago. I had a TERRIBLE problem with urinary retention when on it. Never got up to an adequate dose.

Hi. I tried Pamelor (nortriptyline) a few months ago. The first two or three days, I felt much better (I had been on just Celexa and added 25mg/day of Pamelor). But after a week or so, my anxiety level got much higher. I stuck it out for about three weeks but just couldn't stand it. I also got a very very dry mouth.

I have paradoxical reactions to a lot of drugs, though, so it might be fine for you.

These meds are in a class called tricyclics. The tricyclics have some of the harshest side effects out there, because they affect so many different things in your brain and body.

One of the tamest in the tricyclic group in terms of side effects is pamelor. But in my own experience, the side effects from it of dry mouth, difficulty urinating, and cognitive dulling and confusion were just way too much for me to handle. I need something with side effects I can tolerate for the long run, and the tricyclics do not meet that description. A one week trial and I had no choice but to give up.

I think some of the tricyclics taken in very low doses for insomnia can be tolerable, but normal doses have side effects way too harsh for the majority of people to be able to handle.
