Before I fill my Rx I want to know what you guys think. My pdoc was observant enough to see how high my anxiety is. So she kept the valium and then prescribed Nortriptaline l0mg l-3 tabs a bedtime. So what are your experiences with this med and does it help with anxiety and how high is this dose. Thanks, Fondly, Phillipa

Dose is a starter dose I think. Nortyptaline has been used in anxiety and panic. It is predominalty a noradrenergic med.
I don't know if you have tried a NRI. Given your lack of sucess with other meds, it was a wise choice.

I second what Link said. I think it's worth a trial and I hope it does wonders for you! You deserve to find something that will help...you are so helpful and so understanding for all of us here. I've found that drugs that work a bit more on norepinephrine are more suitable for me than those that work on serotonin and I am so glad I discovered this.
Good luck,
Colleen

Hi Phillipa,
First off, I have paradoxical reactions to a lot of meds so my experience may not be helpful. I added nortriptyline 25mg/day to my Celexa when I was so anxious. The first few days, I felt better, had more energy. Then I started getting way more anxious. I stuck with it for about three weeks before throwing in the towel.
It also gave me a VERY dry mouth. Maybe if I had started at a lower dose, I'd have had better results. It may work great for you. The reason my doctor prescribed it was because it was supposed to help with anxiety.

It was the first AD I was ever on, and taking it was amazing! I think it was the first time since I was about 8 years old that I hadn't been depressed and overwhelmingly anxious. WONDERFUL!
I had trouble with it, of course, including gaining 70 pounds -- doctor told me it wasn't anything to do with the drug, dang her, I felt like such a creepy failure -- dry mouth, constipation, and a few others. Overall, though, I am profoundly grateful I took it, and have no reservations in recommending you try it.
Best luck to you, P/J, and I hope it goes well.

Hi Phillipa,
I hope it works, if not ask about a stimulant, it changed my life, and many others where ADS have not, and the much better Dexedrine has has better results with ,many as a case shows where 2 15mg SR where employed:
DEXEDRINE TOOK ME OUT OF HELL! Have been on it for over a month , after forty years of severe depressions that were broken only for brief periods. It was so bad that it was akin to severe physical torture. No antidepressants helped much or for long. The low dose of Effexor I still am on just took the edge off. I have lived on only for my children's sake, knowing that eventually nature would take me out.Fortunately, I kept trying. Just over a month ago, I was diagnosed with ADD and tried Dexedrine 5mg for the first time. Within an hour my world calmed and everything felt so 'normal,' without the free-floating anxiety and depression I was used to! Focusing was suddenly easy - before it was nearly impossible.
Now I am on 15mg spansules twice a day and my depression has not returned at all! (My dry mouth is mostly gone, the only side effect.) I have energy and can always focus, combined with a natural sense of well-being - I have life and it is incredibly good! I am thankful to my good doctor - ADD is tough to diagnose in adults, especially with no hyperactivity as in my case.
I wonder how many poor souls are wandering this earth with untreated ADD and depression.... If you are one and read this, know that someone else understands and that help and life is possible!
Cheers

Dear P/J;
I am on 1 10 mg cap of Nortryptline(Nora) a night for my Migraines. It hasn't hurt me any and possibly has helped my h/a's some.

Hi Phillipa,
In my experience nortriptyline is a very good drug. It is the active metabolite of amitriptyline and should have less side effects(dry mouth and other anticholinergic effects).
The dosage prescribed is a starter dose and is low. Even at 100mg I didn't even come up to the therapeutic range, according to the blood test. I may be a fast metabolizer of tricyclics though, I was the same way on desipramine. Anyway, seems like a good trial to me.
Good Luck and Be Well,
Jedi

Hi there.
I never took this particular drug myself, but I knew someone that did and she LOVED it. It never made her fat either... so, I think different drugs work differently on people.
I think that is great that you are trying out different drugs - each one can be so different, even within the same family of drugs.
Best wishes and please keep us posted!

Hi PJ!
Your pdoc has prescribed a starting dose of nortriptyline. Start by taking 10mg at night. I hope it helps :-)

Ed, Yes you invented it and I thought you meant pajamas till I put it together Phillipa/Jan. And I just sent you a Babblemail for a more complete answer on combining this with theophylline. You know you're the "KING" when it comes to meds. And you will always have the final say. Fondly, PJ O

Hi PJ!
Are you on the higher dose of theophylline yet?
Have you taken 10mg nortriptyline?

Hi PJ!
>Ed, Yes I'm on the higher dose and don't feel a thing.
It's not making you tired anymore?
>Do you think I'm tx resistant now?
LOL no. It's good that the side effects have passed.
I think it's time to start nortriptyline. You could take 10mg tonight.
Love Ed xx
