Saw a new psych. dr. today, and I have had TERRIBLE luck with SSRI's, so as of now she is keeping me on klonopin, and ambien to sleep at nite, but suggested maybe in a couple months trying one of these: Neurontin, Zonegran, Gasitril, or Topamax. She seemed to lean toward the Topamax, as I have a binge eating problem, and she said there were studies showing, that Topamax, was good for that also. And that these were well tolerated drugs, as the SSRI's, I could not tolerate, due to the nausea. I would so appreciate any insight, or input regarding any experiences you had with any of these drugs. thank you so much.

Remeron can be usefull alone or in conjunction with other meds for nausia. Remeron rarely causes nausia.

I have been taking Neurontin for 2 yrs. It helped me with my anxiety that was not adequately controlled by an SSRI alone. It mostly helped me with anxious thoughts (rather than physical symptoms) but my pdoc said that most people say the opposite. However, I have heard that research doesn't really support the use of Neurontin for anxiety.
Best,

I have taken the Zonegran and did absolutely nothing. I am on the 2nd go around on topamax... I am a strong believer that it depends on the person as it how the drug works. I am doing pretty well with it so far.

Neurontin didn't help with my anxiety but it did help me fall asleep easily and calmly. I was very groggy the next morning for the first few days but that passed relatively quickly. It also helped somewhat with chronic pain. No side effects except the morning grogginess.
I haven't tried any of the others on your list.

> MarshaHi Marsha,
There is very little data behind the use of anticonvulsants for these problems. Topamax will certainly affect eating and weight. The only one approved for use in bipolar is Lamictal--which seems to work well on the depressive side, and not as well on the manic side.Good luck.
