When to give up and go back to Nardil?

Posted by smith562 on August 10, 2005, at 22:21:34

Hey Everyone,

I am still on zoloft/selegiline/klonopin/lithium combo with 75% effect of nardil. But I am still partially isolating my self and having difficulty with residual depression and anxiety. When do you give up and go back to nardil? Better yet, has anyone found away to accept massive weight gain, sexual dysfunction, memory loss, insomnia side effects (I get with nardil)?

Thank you!

Smith

I don't know how old you are, but when I get old enough to completely give up on sex and appearance (> 60yo), that's when I plan to go on Nardil. What about the low dose deprenyl/low dose nardil thing, I dunno 2/30 perhaps. Someone must have tried that.

From my experiences and what I've studied, Nardil is the best medication for treatment resistant atypical depression and social anxiety. I've been on at least 25 other combinations of medications and I'm back on 75mg of Nardil and 1mg of clonazepam. This shows you how little we really know about the brain and depression, considering Nardil was FDA approved in 1959. If they ever come up with something that is proven better, I'll switch in a minute. I know the SSRIs and SNRIs work for some people, but they don't work for me. The side effects of Nardil are much better than the HELL of severe depression.

My last psychiatrist made me suffer through 9 months of different trials and would not prescribe Nardil; the only med that had ever worked for me. I think he would have let me die on an SSRI rather than risk Nardil. I'm from a small town, and every time I find a PDOC that knows what he's doing, he either retires or leaves town. So I struggled through putting the research together and found a MD who would at least listen and be reasonable. If it worked before, it will probably work again.

The psychiatrist that took me off Nardil was supposed to be one of the top treatment resistant docs in the country. At the time I was on Nardil augmented with Wellbutrin. Though contraindicated, I had no trouble with this combination. It helps control the weight side effect of Nardil. This Shrink told me the combination was going to kill me and wanted me off of the Nardil NOW! He wanted to try Prozac (Whoopee), one of the meds I had already tried that didn't work at all. At the time he said this probably would not work, and I should expect to start with repeated ECT (GREAT). Actually I'm saving that one for when the Nardil poops out. Have to have one ACE in the hole, as a last resort (Sorry Ace).

I think the main purpose of life is to develope relationships with other people and have a family. With severe anxiety and depression, you are unable form relationships with others. Ironically, on nardil you finally can get the courage to meet others ... unforunately because I get massively overweight, memory difficulties and sexual dysfunction relationship are hard/impossible to maintain. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
