body fusion feeling - anxiety?

Posted by Sonya on August 1, 2005, at 10:30:00

I need to know if what I've been experiencing lately is simply due to anxiety.

When I'm in bed trying to sleep my body feels like one big, melded/connected/fused bloated blob but disconnected from reality. It feels like I don't have separate arms and legs; that they're totally fused to my torso (the entire length of each limb; not only at the shoulder and hip).

The only way to avoid this feeling is to make sure my arms and legs are not touching any part of my body. So I have to lie on my back with my arms and legs splayed out to the sides.

It's really disturbing.

Okay, I think I understand what you are talking about.

And yes, I think that's a part of anxiety.

I had a similar feeling when I was at my worst with anxiety. Mine felt more like my arms and legs would "float away" if I didn't have them tightly tucked in somewhere. As if my limbs where not connected to me or I had no control over them.

At one point, it was so bad that I would sleep on the couch so I could tuck my feet in between the couch cushions and would sleep with hands inside my pants ( don't get the wrong idea here, LOL).

That was the only way I could fall asleep becuase I felt so disconnected.

I tried explaining this to my husband and he looked at me like, "HUH?" It's hard to describe but it's a very uncomfortable feeling- it's kind of that feeling of unreality. I hate it.

I hope you find relief soon!

Thanks, Spriggy. At least I'm not alone in these bizarre feelings.

Where did I hear this? Was it one of Oliver Sacks' stories? Anyway this bloke is in bed and feels the unwelcome creepy presence of someone else's leg in the bed with him. Eventually he manages to throw the foreign leg out of the bed, and of course has to follow the alien leg out of the bed and falls on the floor.

That body fusion thing. It's not what is meant by leaden paralysis, is it?

This isn't quite like that, thankfully.

I never heard of that. But I'm going to check it out. Thanks so much for your response.
