need a good antianxiety pill klonopin is all i get

Posted by vicksnow on July 22, 2005, at 11:43:37

i'm getting sick and tired of asking my series of different pscychs if i could supplment my klonopin which i take 1mg 3x a day, with the occasional ativan or xanax. i am not an addict, and would not abuse these meds. my mom has a huge supply of xanax 1mg and i only take 1/2 a mg of one of her tablets maybe once or twice a week. so i would not abuse them if i got a prescription. my latest dr told me to take a benedryl with my klonopin. has anyone else had any experience with klonopin. i know its not addictive because you can barely feel the effects. sometimes i become real anxious and the doctors i see refuse to acknowledge this. Does anyone know if klonopin is actually effective??? Why am i still getting anxious when i take 1mg 3x a day and now supposedly should pop a benedryl with it??

Hi, Vicksnow. Yes, Klonopin is very effective. It is one of the most effective of the benzodiazepines. It isn't the old style of tranquilizer, by the way. Large doses, however, will make you excessively tired. It will also impair your short-term memory. The effects of your dosage will be exacerbated by alcohol.

I think the problem you're running into is that most psychopharmacologists are reluctant to prescribe large doses of Klonopin. Most seem to prefer to use Klonopin to augment another medication. If you're experiencing excessive anxiety, there are some medications such as nardil which can be augmented with Klonopin to produce a very large reduction in anxiety.

Overall, you're best bet is to meet with a psychopharmacologist, which is a psychiatrist who has specialized in medications, as opposed to talk therapy. Most University hospitals have such people on staff. If you don't live near one, you can always call and ask a pdoc if he/she is a psychopharmacologist. If they're immediate answer is yes, you've probably found the right person. If they pause, hesitate, and then say something like "I can prescribe medication or engage in talk therapy," you have the wrong person.

Hope this helps. See you. JohnB11
