Mini Dizzy Spells - Anxiety ?

Posted by GoldenSlumbers on July 18, 2005, at 16:59:47

Hi Everyone,

I get these mini dizzy spells. They last maybe 1 second and are gone again (20 times or so per day)

I have occasional anxiety, chest pain, lump in throat etc... but I can deal with them. I know they are a false alarm.

The dizzy thing is a little harder. I try to take deep breaths and not over react. They only happen when I'm thinking (worrying) about the anxiety problem I have but I start each day thinking about it so I am my own worst enemy.

Will they diminish over time ? I have overcome the source of my anxiety. Now I need to overcome the anxiety itself.

Could be worse, all posts appreciated.

Thanks

Hi GS,

Physical manifestations of anxiety were, for me, the last to retreat. It was almost as if a conditioned response had settled in in a very short amount of time - as in: comparing the time I spent with toxic anxiety symptoms and the majority of my life that I has spent without that challenge.

The longer I went well controlled of my anxiety the better it got but it was quite a while.

Assuring that the cause is indeed anxiety may help. Anxiety proned folks tend to be very hyperattentive to physical changes and sometimes this can set up whole new runminations - thus a vicious circle ensues. So checking with your doc may be of help as the dizziness could have another cause or, best case, it may ease your mind.

Oh, it can always be worse. (smile) I hope the pesky dizziness stops soon for you.

First are you taking a benzo which is shortacting like xanax? If so you may need to dose more often. Secondly if you're stopping an SSRI this will cause brain zaps that feel like dizziness or instantaneous moments of loss of consciousness. Fondly, Phillipa

Are you currently taking any meds? Orthostatic hypotension can be a side effect--that is dizziness upon standing. If that is the case, your doc may be able to tinker with doses to make it better. Or just knowing what it is might make it managable.

Glydin are you using any meds ?

I stopped last week and I am feeling better for it.

I notice when I golf or anything else I like I get zero symptoms. I also try to think of something other than anxiety and that really helps. This is the first time I have thought of the anxiety today and the little dizzys are fast and furious.

I think it will take some time but I just can't worry about it any more. The symptoms pass faster when you don't worry about them.

When you said it took a while did you mean months or years ?

Thanks GS

Yes, I was on single therapy Klonopin for three years for garden variety anxiety disorder - name any aspect of toxic anxiety and I had it. I did really well after a few weeks of startup. The first of this year, I has a status change. My anxiety remained well controlled but a clinical level depression set in. Denial worked for a brief time and then something had to give. I currently take Lexapro at 10 mgs and Klonopin very very rarely. The Lex has worked well for the anxiety issues and the depression. That's probably much more info than you really wanted, but I can get longwinded.

That's great. I hope that continues for you.

Yep, it's funny that way. Probably when you're thinking of it, it sets up the onslaught of "spin up" chemicals - primarily norepi - that I think is the root of all physical anxiety symptoms. Basically a glitch in the fight or flight process. Prehaps that "flood" is causing a change in bloodflow to your inner ear balance mechanism, thus the dizziness. That's the theory I can come up with - could be valid and could be not.

Very true.

Months... and it was a gradual process.

You are very welcome. I have a huge place in my heart for fellow anxiety suffers as I KNOW all too well.

Wishing you all the Best,

Glydin
