Some people advocate the use of dopamine receptor agonists to treat depression. However, many people end up abandoning them once somnolence develops.
Any comments regarding the use of Mirapex (pramipexole) versus Requip (ropinerole) versus Dostinex (cabergoline) for bipolar depression?
I responded for about 3 days to the addition of bromocriptine to Parnate + desipramine about 10 years ago.
I hate this illness.

Hi Scott
The only dopaminergic agonists I've taken are bromocriptine and Dostinex. Neither made me sleepy, or tired. Dostinex was better because it didn't block up my sinuses. Both made me feel tingly and nice, but I only took them occasionally.
Why do they (those other 2, anyway) cause somnolence?

Hi Declan.
Thanks for replying.

The first thought that comes to mind is that postsynaptic receptors are downregulated and made less sensitive while presynaptic autoreceptors remain activated, preventing dopamine synthesis and release.
I really don't know. :-)
