Prozac and agitation

Posted by delna on July 3, 2005, at 7:44:23

Hi
My doc just added prozac to my cocktail of meds and I have become really anxious. Does this side effect go away with time- its only been 2 weeks?
Thanks for any replies

How much Prozac? Why not take less until the agitation goes away? People were saying 5mg would work.

I'm thinking of trying this myself. Years ago 20mg was Rx'd for me and it gave me panic attacks. But the first day I felt great! I see my pdoc in another week or so or maybe it's closer to a month. I'm going to ask to get the prozac liquid to experiment with. She told me I could play with my med doseage. Right now I playing with luvox and not getting anywhere. Fondly, Phillipa

Sounds like the dose might be too high. The agitation could go away, or if the dose is just too much it might not. Prozac is easy to play with though due to its long half life, and the ability to mix it in juice for custom doses.

Empty a capsule of prozac into a glass of orange juice. Stir it well. Then sip a quarter glass, a half glass, or whatever, to get a smaller dose than the full capsule. The prozac juice mix can be stored in the fridge for a week. The prozac won't dissolve though, so you have to stir it well each time. It's safe, easy, and no bad taste.

For me, 10mg isn't quite enough, 20mg is just about right, but 30mg turns into an agitated rage.

Prozac gave me much more energy but the cost was increased anxiety, especially in the mornings. It also caused terrible insomnia. I took it for 8-9 years. The anxiety got somewhat less but the insomnia never, ever lessened. It also caused tightened, clenched neck and shoulder muscles which got worse and worse as long as I was on it. I would have stopped long before I did except that every doctor I talked to told me the neck and shoulder pain could not possibly be from the Prozac.

Thanks for that....
The anxiety is a pretty high price to pay. I find that wellbutrin gives energy without aggitation but I just had to add another AD because the depression has becoming worse..How did you cope with the insomnia?

I'm only on 10mg...though I see your point. I'm wondering if less would do anything for the depression..>

Your'e on a pretty low dose but I always get the start up agitation even on only 10mg. My trick is to just skip a day. Prozacs long half life makes that possible and then I try again. Sometimes that is all it takes to help your body get used to it and sometimes I have to skip another day a couple of days down the road. If not you can try doing every other day for a couple of days (its like taking 5mg) and then give the 10mg a try again. You can probably just call your doc about trying it that way without having to wait to see them. Its a pretty common way of starting out with it and can really put a nix on the side effects.

Thanks for that...I didn't think of missing a day but that makes alot of sense.
So you do believe that the agitation can be minimized by starting slowly? And that it gets better with time?
Thanks

For a while, beer and benadryl. Then I decided that wasn't such a great idea and just lived with it. I didn't know the Prozac was causing it. I just waited in bed for 2-3 hours every night to fall asleep. Then I would sleep late the next day if I could to make up for it.
