Dissociative Identity Disorder

Posted by daff on June 21, 2005, at 19:49:29

Hi,
I have Dissociative Identity Disorder and would be grateful to hear from anyone in the same position. I use to be able to get 5-6 hours a sleep a night with antidepressants and sleeping tablets - but now they are not even working. Any feedback would be appreciated. Over the years I have worked my way through what feels like every ssri, tricylic & maoi on the market - and none of them work long term. I end up not being able to sleep at all & and with a nasty bright red rash on my neck - along with a number of other side effects. I took a drug called Haldolperidol a few weeks ago for anxiety and ended up so agitated I thought I might actually climb the wall. I am in on going therapy which is a godsend - but would love to hear from anyone with DID who can relate to what I am trying to say.
Thanks for your time
Daff.

i used to have dissociation, htat feeling a egg is 'cracking' over your head, and the 'yolk' flows down your face, numbness. Getting disoriented.

i take
lorazepam 6mg
Restoril 30mg nightly

currently but this treatent isnt effective. I am going back to clonazepam for panic attacks.

I never had other alter, all i thought is i was going crazy and still do.

It feels like time slows down when i get 'out of it' but i never switched.

Stimulants helped with "keeping" with reality for me, Adderall 40-60mg usally kept me good and alert, i didnt have that 'errie' feeling becuase i felt 'in-control'.

Hi again,

>I use to be able to get 5-6 hours a sleep a night with antidepressants and sleeping tablets - but now they are not even working.

What medication are you taking at the moment? Do you think it's benefitting you at all? Any side effects?

>I am in on going therapy which is a godsend.......

Ahh, you should post on the psychology board too :-)

Kind regards

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have limited access to a computer so my replies may take a while. I am currently withdrawing off of Lexapro as I broke out in a nasty red itchy burning rash on my neck withing 24 hours of taking it. It looked like I had a disease and I also felt like fainting every half hour. To stay sane I am taking Kalma(alprazolam) - till I can figure out what antidepressant to try next. My dissociation was first experienced by hearing different voices in my head - I thought I was truly mad - so I told no-one. Over time I began to realise that they were a part of me. The voices don't come from outside of me. The more I acknowledged them the more aware I became of how they each are different ages and hold different emotions and memories. The shifting between these different parts of me is automatic - and if I don't listen to them - all hell breaks loose. Saying this is hard is putting it lightly. Thanks for listening.

Hi Daff,

Not a problem :-)

Are you being treated for any other conditions apart from DID? eg. anxiety, depression, PTSD...

my personal opinion is you just have to treat the symptoms and do the therapy. depending on "who is out" will depend on how your sleep meds work, for example. you have to be able to make deals and trade offs, and that's probably a post for the psychology board. did you post over there? but i've found ambien works one night and not at all the next, or restoril, or klonopin, or xanax. but what works the best is to be aware enough to know what you are dealing with and "who" you are dealing with. your therapist can help you with that. because certain parts respond better to different meds. but meds can work.

Sorry I have taken so long to answer - all replies have been very helpful. I am going into hospital for 2 weeks (unrelated to did) - so have been a little nuts trying to get ready. Hopefully I will also be able to get some help with meds there. Will post when I get out. thanks for listening.
