I am interested in trying a MAO, but my doc says there are too many restrictions. But if they work, then I want to try it for my depression/anxiety.

From what I have read, I think that they are starting to become more popular again. Nardil is supposed to be very good for social anxiety and parnate for depression. Moclobemide is another one that I think is suppose to be good, and without the dietary restrictions.
Some doctors are set in their ways and won't use drugs that they are not used to. So you may have to see a different doc or a pdoc.

I think a lot of people assume that newer drugs are better, but this is not always the case.
Sad to say the world of Psychiatry has 'fashions' just like any other part of life.
MAOIs and Trycyclics are considered old fashioned and outdated at the moment.
That doesn't mean in practise that they're inferior, just because their not on patent any more, so no one wants to push them.I've never taken an MAOI, but I have taken Clomipramine a trycyclic.
I can safely say that Clomipramine was more effective than any of the newer drugs I've tried, although it did have more side effects, theres always a trade off!Given a choice between an SSRI or a tryclic, I would go for the tryclic, if I couldn't have an MAOI!

MAOIs are the only antidepressants that actually improved the quality of my life. SSRIs relieve depression, IMHO, more often than not by simply impairing the ability to feel any emotion at all. While perhaps logically one could call this an "antidepressant" effect, I feel it is anything but!

Would you say this is true of MAOIs for atypical depression?

It is ESPECIALLY true for MAOIs and atypical depression, which is one of the conditions for which MAOIs are the "gold standard".
