i just took my first dose of 40mg of parnate... this is on top of 150mg of desipramine. how will i know if i am having a hypertensive crisis or serotonin syndrome?

Buy a bood pressure monitor and use it for the first little while of the combination.
AS far as serotonin syndrome, do a google search of "serotonin syndrome" + symptoms.
Personally, I would have started on a lower dose of the parnate to begin. I don't know what kind of doctor would launch you on 40mg in addition to the other medication. That is insanity.

A sudden, very severe headache is a good indicator of a hypertensive crisis.

Based on what I believe to have been a hypertensive crisis, you'll feel a god-awful pain in your temples. You will also feel extremely nauseous. Lying down does not help. I was prescribed nifedipine for this, which you have to bite down on and dissolve under your tongue...it tastes bad but does the trick. As for serotonin syndrome, symptoms may resemble a very high fever if I remember correctly.
