I am getting HYPOMANIC AGAIN! (I love Cymbalta)

Posted by D minor on May 16, 2005, at 16:39:35

At least I think I'm getting hypomanic again. It's been a week since I re-started the Cymbalta 30mg. My pdoc was hoping that with the 100mg of Topamax on board I wouldn't swing up. Looks like we were wrong. I feel terrific. Full of energy.

I don't really know what to do since I just saw my pdoc for the last time and I won't be seeing my new pdoc for another week and a half.

Someone suggested that I take the Cymbalta every other day. Do you think that would work?

I guess I don't really want to do anything. I'm not out of control (yet). Just a little buzz. It feels so good not to be depressed. Ahh.

Did your pdoc take you off cymbalta when you became hypomanic before? Fondly, Phillipa

Yes he did. Then he put me back on it when I became depressed again.

Maybe half the dose would work? Fondly, Phillipa

If your history indicates that hypomania escalates enough to adversely affect your life, or if it ultimately leads to a subsequent depression, I would recommend that you treat the mania as soon as possible by taking Zyprexa or Depakote temporarily to maintain stability. Ideally, you would not want to alter your Cymbalta regime. I doubt taking it every other day would be of much help. It might even cause the mania to accelerate through "pulsing" the drug. It would be better to just lower the daily dose.

I hope you don't have to interrupt your taking of Cymbalta. I have seen to recent failures of Topamax to prevent hypomania. I don't think it makes such a good anti-manic agent or monotherapy mood stabilizer. It might confer stability further down the road as a prophylactic, but I don't think the drug has really proven itself yet. Still, some people here really do like it.

Sooo. If you don't have any antipsychotics or Depakote to work with, and you are concerned with the escalation of mania, I guess I would increase the Topamax and lower the Cymbalta temporarily. I can't think of anything else right now that makes sense except that you also try to keep a regular sleep schedule.

Once again, I think Scott's advice is very good. They do make Cymbalta in a 20mg dose. Maybe that would be worth a try.

Thanks for the reply Scott,
well, I'm also on 600mg of Seroquel, which is supposed to be anti-manic. And 5mg of Abilify.

I am also between doctors. I see my new pdoc next wednesday. I hope to hang on till then. Do you really think that taking it every other day might make it worse? I have noticed that on the days I don't take it I seem to get more agitated. I thought that was a withdrawl symptom. I'll have to "Google" that (unless you know of any links?). I talked to a pharmacist who said splitting the capsules was no good. So I would have to get a prescription for the 20mg from somewhere. Boy.

Why can't you split the capsules? Is it an extended release thingo?

Well, its a problem with the enteric coating. Plus she said I wouldn'd be getting acurate amounts of the drug since some of the beads aren't actually medicine but filler.

I didn't take any Cymbalta today and I don't feel anything like I did yesterday. I'm exhausted. So sleepy. And not at all feeling hypomnanic. Whats going on here?

I took Cymbalta and it made me really energetic and hyper. I think it is an especially bad AD in terms of that effect.
