best AP for anxiety?

Posted by chess on May 9, 2005, at 9:00:59

okay, my doc has offered me a low-dose of an AP for my anxiety instead of Xanax
She's offered Seroquel, Risperdal, or Zyprexa
Which of these is better for anxiety?
Is there another one that is better?
Which one can be taken once a day?
Thanks all!

Ive taken all three and took them all once daily. Personally I found Seroquel to be the best for anxiety though Resperdal was good for a while until I kind of got use to it.

Take care.

hi alienatari
what dosages did you take?
could you take any at bedtime and it would last through the next day?
i also have ocd and i read that some of the APs can worsen OCD, do you anything about that?
thanks

risperdal didn't seem to do much of anything for me, seroquel was Great for sleep. Zyprexa is suprisingly good for my anxiety, however there is a weight gain issue that happens for many people.
the first time i took it i didn't gain any weight at all, this time i have. so go figure.

My experience is that the old antipsychotics are better for anxiety than the atypicals. Thioridazine (Melleril) has been the best for me with regards to anxiety - its usage is limited now due to serious side effects. Bunny

Hi,
I've never tried Zyprexa, but between Seroquel and Risperdal I'd definatly say that Seroquel is the better for anxiety. I take quite a high dose (600mg) at night and it puts me right t sleep. I've hear of people taking small (25mg) doses during the day for anxiety.

Good luck,
dm

Well thats put me off the newer APs. I took mellarill, serenace, anatensol, stellazine (what names!) because psychs used to prescribe them very easily, and maybe still do. For me I just needed to believe we had soul doctors, although the effects of these drugs was evidence enough against it.

Sorry, I just can't buy the AP theory for anxiety. To me the side effects are too great. And not enough time has gone by to show no longterm side effects. Just like the SSRI's all they have done for me is create more anxiety. Of course that's just me and we're all different. Fondly, Phillipa

I have taken all three, and Zyprexa by far is the best at quelling anxiety.

Hey Chess. I think probably seroquel was best for my OCD i dont really think the others did anything. Maybe Solian did but that also gave me a lot of problems so I had to stop it. Abilify did nothing but I wasnt on it long enough I guess.
Seroquel I was on 800mg. Resperdal helped too I guess. I was on 4mg of that. And Zyprexa I was on 20mg of. Take care, I hope you find one that works.

What are the differences between Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa on hitting receptors? Any good charts/sites that describe this?

If this direct link does not work, go to www.abilify.com and browse through.....it compares abilify, Zyprexa, risperdal and Geodon.

Now, I got this information from http://sl.schofield3.home.att.net/medicine/psychiatric_drugs_chart.html...I'm assuming it's fairly accurate.

Risperdal antagonizes 5-HT(serotonin)2a receptors primarily, and to a lesser extent DA(dopamine)2 and NE(norepinephrine)-alpha receptors. It's also an H(histamine)1 receptor antagonist.

Seroquel is mainly a 5-HT2a and NE-alpha1 receptor antagonist. It targets the DA2 and H1 receptors as well...and according to this website, it's a "sigma antagonist". I don't know what that means.

Zyprexa blocks acetylcholine muscarinic receptors, is an H1 receptor antagonist and again a 5-HT2a antagonist. The blockade of muscarinic receptors is responsible for those notorious anti-cholinergic side-effects caused by certain medications, but I'm pretty sure that in this case they're not all that prevalent. The DA1, 2, 5-HT2c, and NE-alpha1 receptors are antagonized as well to an extent.

It looks like the two other anti-psychotics have unique features...Geodon is mainly a 5-HT2a antagonist, and a DA2 and 3 receptor blocker. But it's also a 5-HT1a agonist apparently, and very mildly inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. It also antagonizes the 5-HT1d receptor...wonder what that does. Abilify is a DA2 partial agonist, which means it's supposed to sort of normalize dopamine levels. It's also a DA3 antagonist. It antagonizes the 5-HT2a receptor, not as much so, and is also a 5-HT1a agonist.

I read what I had to, summarized it...but I don't get how many of the actions of these drugs ultimately affect us.

Son of a...you can't click on the link because I had to go and add a pause. Here, if you're at all interested: http://sl.schofield3.home.att.net/medicine/psychiatric_drugs_chart.html

This is a Power Point presentation on AP's. Slide 7 is probably what you're looking for. The whole thing is pretty informative.
