Provigil - holey moley, batman!

Posted by partlycloudy on May 3, 2005, at 8:36:46

I have had lingering depression and lethargy while on 60mg of Cymbalta. This morning I started a half dose of Provigil (100mg) and I feel like someone put a rocket in my head. Talk about motivated! I might be able to remember callers' names today at work. I hope, oh how I hope this works. Otherwise I'm having a heck of a placebo effect.
Fingers crossed.
p.s. I take propanolol to maintain normal pressure and xanax for anxiety.

I'm not advocating this, but a few days ago I took 1000mgs Provigil in one dose. I had used this drug 5 years ago with nada sucess. And when combined with the Geodon I was taking it made my eyes look like they needed an exorcist. My facial expressions looked agitated, and I was more nervous not necessarilty anxious. The 1000mgs was great. I swear I couldn't tell it apart from MDMA with no ill side effects. It did the job that Provigil is to do, but at 5 times the reccommened dose. I wouldn't be able to afford that I don't think. I get varied responses to Provigil each time I take. Tommorow a little 100mg pill might shoot me through the roof and then the next day might as well be a sugar pill.

I think its a weird drug at least for my body chemistry.

I'm also on 100mgs Seroquel if that could have augmented or caused some other crazy interaction.

Provigil has been my faithful friend, boosting my mood as well as helping me feel awake. Even during that period when I was on no anti-depressant at all, it helped keep me from the bottom of the sub-basement, moodwise.

I'm glad it's helping you today -- while mileage varies, if you react the way I did, it will not poop out over time, although the benefits do have a way of wearing off kinda quickly during the day -- what has helped me at times with that is a front loaded split dose: 100mg AM, with an additional 50mg around midday. Take the second dose BEFORE the first wears off, of course.

The best news about it for me is that it doesn't affect sleep! I sleep just fine, maybe better, on it.

I'm so glad something is helping, darling!

wow. what exactly is provigil? what's it's mechanism of action? I know it is officially for sleep disorders yet at the same time I see it is listed as a controlled substance..

wonder if it would be good for ADD in place of adderall??

I specifically asked my p-doc if it was considered a stimulant, and she said that it wasn't, but that she's had success in prescribing it as an adjunct to antidepressants. I have had difficulty in concentrating - no, scratch that, THINKING and processing thoughts, due to my depression - and it's helping in that respect, too. My dx is bipolar2, GAD, and panic attacks.

(I kind of had a feeling she was going to try this one next.)

provigil is a controlled substance because @ high doses such as that it releases dopamine and acts like speed!

just a note of caution.. im sure u noticed the urine smell from it! It is very toxic to liver @ high doses so be careful. 1000 is insanely high!

Provigil is a stimulant, unrelated to amphetamines and amphetaminic derivatives (like Ritalin). It has a long half-life, which is useful, because you won´t need to take it more than once (or twice) a day. That is also good because it doesn´t promote dose-escalation, so addiction may be not a problem as it is with schedule 2 stims (IR). It has fewer side effects than long-acting stims (adderall/concerta). Though, modafinil is not a weak stimulant. It works very effectively for the treatment of chronic hypersomnia and narcolepsy. These are its approved therapeutic uses. But modafinil may be also helpful for ADHD. In fact, I´m taking 100-200 mg/day of modafinil along with 40-60 mg/day of ritalin, for ADHD. And I can say that it acts as a memory booster and it improves executive functions and promotes wakefulness. But, sadly, its performance over impulsiveness and hyperactivity is quite poor. Despite this fact, it can be combined with ritalin or adderall for broader results.

Does it feel the same as Adrafanil? Had mixed feelings about that one. (Might not have combined well with Hydergine.)

Same here, I took 800 mg one day and it did absolutely nothing. I felt more tired if anything. Less than 300 mg never had any effect on me. When it works it's great but it's like there's a random amount of active ingredient in each pill or something.

Not just you, several others here besides you and me.
