I take a tiny dose of toprol. The toprol XL comes in a 25 mg tablet which is scored.
You can snap it in half without messing up the 24 hour time release for a dose of 12.5 mg/day.
That is just enought to take care of the feeling that my heart is beating too fast/too hard that I sometimes get from Dexedrine.

Even tho my last dose of Dexedrine is around 4pm or so - many times my heart still beats fast at night as a side effect of the Dexedrine. In the past I've taken clonidine to help (although it wasn't Rx=ed for that) and it helped enough so I could relax and get to sleep. Perhaps I should ask my doc about it?

Let me give you my answer in the form of my recent history. I have had a really bad "nervous discomfort" in my chest (or heart, I can't tell which it is from) my whole life. It includes palpitations. It's there 24/7.
I was put on a beta blocker, 50 mg Toprol, for high blood pressure, about 3 weeks ago. This has taken the horrible feeling away!
Then, I started on Concerta yesterday (27 mg). It works great for my ADD and it is as smooth as can be. No wearing off feeling or rebound.
The only other psychotropic drug that I take is Cymbalta 60 mg. The Cymbalta has been great for my depression and anxiety. It also helped with ADD, but not enough. That's why I added Concerta.
I believe that many kids are put on the beta blocker Clonidine to counter any aggitation caused by Ritalin or a different stimulant. It also comes in a patch called Catapress. Clonidine not only calms the jitters and ameliorates behavioral opposition disorder, but it also acts as an ADD drug.
There is a similar beta blocker called Tenex (aka guanfacine) which causes less daytime tiredness than clonidine. (Although even with clonidine, the daytime tiredness gets better over time).
A different formulation of Tenex might be marketed in the future as an ADD drug.

Hi!
does clonidine really have positive effects?
How is you experience with clonidine (sideeffects, dosage, effectiveness, experience related to anxiety)?
regards

I think that's what we gave the cocaine addicts during withdrawal if they needed it. Thought it only lowered BP. That's how much I know! Fondly, Phillipa

I am going to try this response one more time.
This time is shorter though, hope it posts this time. You talked about the Concerta and the Toprol.
I had only taken the Concerta about a week and then went in the hospital with pneumonia.
I was pleased with the results of the Concerta and hopefully will be able to continue using it.
During my hospital stay they discovered an enlargment in my heart and after my discharge I went to a cardiologist who discovered I have mitral valve prolapse and borderline high blood pressure. He prescribed Toprol XR 25MG. This takes care of the blood pressure and also has elimnated the palpations I was experiencing.
I want to start back on the Concerta but was not sure because of the elevated blood pressure.
I possibly will start a new job before I return to the cardiologist so the Concerta would help if I could start taking it again.
Anyone have suggestions. Also Bill, I was wondering if your palpatations could be the same thing. Anyways, advice or personal experience would be appreciated.SusanLily
