Hi all,
I started Topamax from a starter pack about three weeks ago with the hopes it will help with Nardil weight gain. With my pdoc's permission, my GP gave me a starter pack, which would titrate me up to 100 mg. Well, I guess we crossed wires, because the plan was to go to 50 mg, which I take as 25 mg twice per day, and hold for a few weeks to judge the effect.I called to get a prescription when the starter pack ran out, I would up with 30 100 mg pills from the pharmacy (my hubby just picked these up today.)
What should I do?
Cut them in half and take 50mg once per day in the evening?Cut them into quarters (yuck) and go back to my usual regimen (note, I ran out after last night's dose, so I did not get my usual 25 mg this a.m.).
Skip today and call GP in the a.m. to get a corrected prescription (although I've got more than I need right now, and there is, of course a financial savings there, heh heh heh).
Other suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
gg

You confused me after the starter pack. Were you supposed to be at 25mg for a few days and then raise it to 50mg? So, you've been taking 50mg all along? Is it working, and do you feel okey. If so, and the plan was to increase then I would continue and call your pdoc in the am. Just my opinion of course. Fondly, Phillipa

Sorry, the starter pack (all 25 mg tabs), which is a promo thing from the drug company, has you start at 25 mg in the evening for 2-3 days (I forget), then increase to 25 mg bid, then go to 75 mg (two in evening, and one in am). Then go to 100, which you would get from doc. I suppose that would either come in 50 mg tabs you would take bid or would come in 100 tabs you would take qd.
My pdoc and I decided I should stay at 50 mg for a few weeks versus titrate up to 100, mainly because I tend to be med-sensitive, and some of the SE's would be horrible for someone in a doctoral program trying to finish a dissertation. When I called my GP to get the scrip, I told them I was only taking 50mg, but apparently, they didn't hear that part or didn't write it down for the doc. Dang it.
OH, and just in case: bid = twice per day, qd = once per day.

I'm teasing now. And QD, once a day, and QOD every other day, and TID three times a day. What field is your dissertation in? Fondly, Phillipa

I would buy a pill splitter and cut them in half and take the 50 mg at once.

Ah, I used to work in a health care field, so I tend to know a lot of the jargon. :)

l5 years as an RN. Would love to go back to work. I "floated" in the hospital from med-surg, ICU, ER, CCU, Telemetry, Surgical, Pediatrics, OB-GYN, step-down tele, step-down ICU, even occasionally nursery. I ended up in my first love psych. Received my national certification and then I got sick. After not using it for 5 years you lose it, so I no longer have it. But, who cares, it's doing what you love that counts. That's one of the reasons I love this Board. I've learned more here than I ever did about meds and why people act as they do from any pdoc. Every time a pt returned to the hospital and said their meds weren't working immediately the doctors said they weren't taking them. Sometimes I feel so guilty now. I just won't ever make the same mistakes. I'll listen to the pts first. Fondly, Phillipa
