Neurontin and Orgasm

Posted by ed_uk on March 31, 2005, at 14:17:45

Hello,

If you have tried Neurontin (gabapentin)........

Did it inhibit/delay orgasm?

Thanks,
Ed.

Did it inhibit it completely? Did it cause any other sexual effects?

Nope. Not Neurontin. Was completely neutral to me. But Lyrica did this (delay, much like a SSRI) for the first few weeks.

Limp noodle is more accurate, but also diminished capacity to orgasm. Sexual dysfunction is not a listed side effect for this med. Another case of deceptive data reporting?

I have found it delays, but does not inhibit.

Hello,

Thank you everyone for your replies so far.

I am hoping that lots more people will reply :-)

Please tell me, if you've even taken Neurontin....

Did it cause anorgasmia or delayed orgasm? Did it make you impotent? Did it have any effect on your libido?

Thanks,
Ed.

To lunesta: I haven't had sex for ages either, I'm just in the process of trying to fix my sexual functioning.

Hi,

I had posted this previously on a different thread, but I thought I'd repost it here because this is such and important topic.

I took Neurontin for neuropathic pain about 8 years ago. It helped somewhat with the pain and was good for sleep. I also noticed that I was having more intense orgasms. It was the only med I was taking at the time. Maybe the positive effects on pain and sleep relaxed my brain so I could enjoy sex more. I wish I knew what the heck it was doing...

Also, has anyone ever come across this website?
http://www.actionlove.com/

I did a google search for "neurotransmitters and orgasm" recently and this was one of the sites that came up. The guy is a PhD and he has some pretty interesting ideas on neurotransmitters, hormones, prostaglandins and how they relate to orgasm/sexual function. The whole site is dedicated to this. It seems him and his wife are pretty much all about the perfect orgasm. (Nothing wrong with that.) Of course he also sells his own supplements. But, I must say, from looking at the ingredients lists they look to be pretty well thought out. I also emailed him with a question and he got back to me pretty quickly. If anyone checks it out let me know what you think...

Hi Franco!

Thank you for your response :-)

Did Neurontin delay orgasm, speed it up..... or did it happen at the 'normal' time?

Thanks for the link.

Regards,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

> Thank you for your response :-)

Don't mention it. We're all in this together. :-)

>Did Neurontin delay orgasm, speed it up..... or did it happen at the 'normal' time?

Hard to remember. (Unfortunately, my memory has been going down hill with the rest of me.) But I think there might have been a slight delay. Again this may have been do to my brain being more relaxed do to Neurontin's positive effect on sleep and pain. But who knows. We all know that anything that effects the brain (our most powerful sex organ) can effect sexual function in any number of ways. Unfortunately, with most psych meds, the effect is usually a negative one. After Neurontin my doc suggested I try Paxil. The intensity of the orgasm was no longer an issue, because it became virtually impossible to have one! Darn psych meds...

Hi Ed,

> I hope the Wellbutrin drowsiness subsides. (I'm not confusing your meds with someone else I hope!)

Thanks...that's me all right. I'm trying to pin this one down. I was really hoping it would give me an energy boost. But it is helping with pain, and that ain't too shabby. Maybe my DA receptors have become down-regulated. But you would think that by blocking DA reuptake a med like Wellbutrin would overcome this, to a degree at least, by making more DA available in the synapse. They may be so hyporesponsive, however, that only a good flogging with a true stimulant like Dexedrine can rouse them back into action. Of course if I try Dexedrine (or Aderall, or Ritalin, etc.) and they also make me tired, I may be dealing with a totally different problem. Like an over sensitive autoreceptor. Which is a lot harder to address. Knowing my screwed up brain it will inevitably be the worst case scenario. But than again I'm only on day 4 of Wellbutrin, so I might be getting a little ahead of myself. :-)

Sorry. I don't want to take this thread off of the original topic. Maybe I'll start a knew one: "Screwed Up Synapses..."

Hi Franco!

>But you would think that by blocking DA reuptake a med like Wellbutrin would overcome this, to a degree at least, by making more DA available in the synapse.

Although Wellbutrin is a dopamine reupatke inhibitor, it is only a very weak dopamine reuptake inhibitor, its effects on dopamine reuptake might not even be clinically significant. Wellbutrin is a very mysterious drug, very little is known about its mechanism of action.

Ed.

Hi again,

> Although Wellbutrin is a dopamine reupatke inhibitor, it is only a very weak dopamine reuptake inhibitor, its effects on dopamine reuptake might not even be clinically significant. Wellbutrin is a very mysterious drug, very little is known about its mechanism of action.

This is very true. Most of what I've learned about it I read here: www.preskorn.com

Right now it feels more like a muscle relaxant than anything else. I really need to try a stimulant and see if it wipes me out. I think I could learn a lot from that. And receptor profiling of my brain has pretty much become my life's ambition. (Right now it's about the only thing I have any ambition for.) I'd like to try a true dopamine reuptake inhibitor but there aren't any. Unless I can get my hands on some Survector. Unfortunately, because of the few knuckleheads that end up abusing them, the bureaucrats won't let us have any. Damn knuckleheads! Damn bureaucrats! (My apologies to any knuckleheads/bureaucrats that may be reading this post. But you know it's true.) Maybe I'll just down a couple of pots of black coffee. :-)

I'll have to talk to my doc about adding a stimulant. If I get a boost from it than I'd know that my DA receptors indeed are working, but that Wellbutrin just isn't enough of a DRI to stimulate them.

LOL I know how you feel!

>I'd like to try a true dopamine reuptake inhibitor but there aren't any.........

You could try methylphenidate next, it inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine as well.

Hi!

I'm trying to find out whether Neurontin is likely to delay (or inhibit) orgasm. I'd like to hear from anyone who's taken Neurontin ie. most people on this board!!!

Thank you,
Ed.

PS. Please reply- it will only take a second :-)

Neurontin doesn't interfere with my orgasm sensatation..my other meds do..it can dry me up a bit sometimes~squeeky squeeky . It also makes me feel more horny.
Well thats my 2 pence

And a much appreciated 2 pence it is. Do you think the increased friskiness is do to it making you more relaxed? (If it does relax you.) That's what I think did it for me. Although I think I have read somewhere that it may increase dopamine by some strange mechanism. Which would also explain this...
