Zoloft vs Remeron

Posted by mikkie on March 29, 2005, at 14:43:51

Hi all

I have suffered from Panic disorder and depression since a teenager. I have been on Tofranil (Impramine)for about 25 years. Ever since 9/11( an eye witness) I have not been able to get myself back to a "happy state" My doc felt that there were so many better drugs out there with less side effects and might be more effective for the depression.

So I was put on Zoloft which initially worked very well but then the side effect of insomnia kicked in and I have been sleep deprived although it helped my mood. I also had sexual dysfunction and restless leg syndrome. I was switched to Lexapro which was a disaster tremors etc. So the feeling is that SSRI are activating me too much. My doc is considering remeron. Anyone been in a similar situation on SSRI's and has it helped. I am also concerned about what I read about weight gain however I am on prevacid for acid refulx don't know if that would reduce that side effect similar to Zantac does.

I am currently trying to stop the remeron that was rx'd for me to help with sleep. I had stopped it but the pharmacist told me that I should take it every other day for awhile. I went from l5mg to 7.5mg due to wt gain. Only l0lbs, but that's too much. I'm also on low dose zoloft and want to stop that too. I'm tired of AD's., and their side effects. Fondly, Phillipa

I gained major weight on Zoloft and was switched to Paxil and gained some more. Then a small amount of serequel was added at nite and now I sleep like a log and have completely lost my appitite. What a strange feeling. Gone from being the donut and chocolate queen to having to make myself eat.

I know some people don't gain weight but unfortunately a lot of SSRI's make you carb crave.

Hopefully, you'll be OK. Take care

I have been on both (at different times), and found remeron very helpful in adressing my suicidal ideation, although I felt completely numbed and gained a noticable amount of weight while eating less and exercising more. Zoloft didn't seem to help me at all, but I didn't have any weight gain.

My theory is if what you are on isn't working after giving it a good try, you may as wall try something else. Everybody responds differently, and you have to keep trying until you find the right thing for you. Even though I gained weight on remeron, I don't regret trying it, as if I hadn't tried, I would never have known, and the weight came off as soon as I stopped taking it.

Funny, I've been thinking about trying Tofranil because I can't seem to find any SSRI's that work that well! Did you stop the Tofranil because it quit working, side effects or because your doctor thought it would be better to try something new?

Tofranil did work for me for many many years. The doc wanted to try something new and it was pooping out on me. Side effects from Tofranil that I experienced was nightmares, low tolerance for the sun and hot weather. Feeling faint if I got up too quickly out of bed in the AM. It can have some sedative effects sleepiness in the day and it can lower blood pressure. I found none of these terribly troublesome.
