Hi.
There are two sub-types of schizoaffective disorder: the bipolar type and the depressive type. I know the bipolar type has a better prognosis than the depressive type, which can have a residual defect with the passing of time (but I don't know what that defect is ... I can't remember). Bipolar schizoaffective disorder is more similar to bipolar disorder than schizophrenia. People with bipolar disorder may also suffer from isolated episodes of schizoaffective disorders. So you can see your question makes perfect sense.People who have a schizoaffective disorder have symptoms of schizophrenia, such as bizarre delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech or behaviour, and mood disorders, all at the same time. HOWEVER, there will be periods of two week or more where there are only psychotic features and no mood disorder features (no depression, no mania, no mixed states). THIS is the key factor in distinguishing from a mood disorder with psychotic features.
Does this help?

Hi;
One of my friends first dx'ed with Shizo., then Shizoaffective Disorder. However, now his dx changed to Bp I with psychotic features.Even an experienced pdoc. had a VERY hard time to dx this disorder due to the complexities along with detailed explanation from the ppl. that was his case. But, with a proper medication/med. combo. he's been doing VERY WELL as if he has NO M.I. at all in some point, except a powerful med. regimen for him to get through everyday.
Then, actually dx is NOT really important, ... rather med. response along with a right pdoc. and right med. combo. is a VERY significant factor to get better. Even my dx. with Bp II seems MORE benign in comparison to his dx. Bp I with psycho., he's been MUCH productive than any other M.I.s. because of his 'positive' med. response along with a right psycho.therapy, both of which seems helping his 'recovery.'
The following web-site has a good explanation regarding shizo. and all other M.I.s, including 'Shizoaffective Disorder(you need to scroll down quite a bit to find one).

HG,
What meds is your friend on?? My cousin's dx falls in as BPI w/psychosis --so is very similar in its nature. Secretly I now wonder, in thinking back,whether schizoaffective would be more accurate.

Hi:
I didn't ask him regarding his med. combo. RECENTLY, however in my guess through a good friendship along with 'common' bond/M.I., he's been taking Zyprexa/high dosage, Effexor(now, seems Lexapro)/also, high dosage, Prozac(?) along with mood-stabilizer, something like 'Lamictal' or some form of M.S.(but, not Lithium) along with other 'sleeping aid'(I can't remember the name of med.). First off, he went to 'institution' because of 'public' tresspassing along with a few police records. All of those incidents were due to 'psychosis/delutional' episodes. After about 4 to 6 months' stay in the Institution/hospital, he got to know how to deal with his problem. Basically, he's a quite smart guy, then he learned a lot of 'coping-skill' during his stay there. Besides this, he seemed to get a 'terrific' therapy who helped him get back on his feet. Since then, however he had a 'bad' manic episode just 'once,' on which he ended-up in the psycho.-ward, but eventually he managed to get back his work related to medical field.In the beginning of his dx with shizoaffective disorder, he had an older anti-psycho. med., 'Haldol' and other meds.(I can't recall all of those). Also, he went through several different med. combo.(trial and error), until his pdoc. found a right med. combo. with periodical dosage adjustment.
