more that 200mg lamictal- does it help?? ANYONE

Posted by delna on March 24, 2005, at 12:59:59

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has been taking lamictal at doses higher than 200mg. And if you have found it useful.
It has been stated by the manufactures and some studies that above 200mg there are no added therapeutic effects. However I have also seen information saying that the dose can go up to 400mg depending on person's need/response.

I am thoroughly confused. I am on 200mg lamictal and have been doing well (also on Effexor 37.5mg and Wellbutrin 300mg). It was the lamictal that really, really stabilized me.
However lately I have started getting really bad suicidal lows. (BTW I am BPII)
Anyway to cut a long tedious story short, being unresponsive and very hypersensitive to nearly all meds, my only hope of stability is an increase in lamictal dose.

My pdoc is not being much help- he just keeps changing his mind every time a new study comes out.

So if there is anyone who has some clues about the ‘beyond 200mg lamictal dosage’ enigma I would be extremely grateful for inputs.

Thank you
All the best
D

I've read on other boards were people with BP are on up to dosages near 400 mg's.

My dad was on 250 mg's at one point, he survived and it stabilized him.

He is back down to 100 mg's but it was for a time when he really needed his dose upped.

From what I gleaned from previous posts, Lamictal is one of those drugs that you need to take more and more of....it has an effect at one level, then fades and you need more. But also it seems at least people do find an amounnt eventually that helps long-term.
I have definitely read here of people going well beyond 200mg. and finding more relief. I myself have not gone beyond 200mg, so I cant directly tell you about my experiences.
Good luck!!

i take 300. Was on 250 but its effect did seem to wear off a little-- was getting gloomy thoughts again, though not hardcore depressed. 300 works so far, but it's only been a few weeks.

Thanks so much for all the inputs!! really appreciate it.
Anyway, I have had to switch pdoc's because I was totally suicidal (I mean notes and all) and I wrote (he doen't take phone calls) to him in desperation to ask what to do but he told me he couldnt talk or advise as he was to busy.
Anyway this new doctor comes highly reccomended and is both a psychiatrist and therapist. She thought it reasonable to increase the Lamictal does by 12.5mg at a time and see how it goes since it is a drug that suits me pretty well. Hope it helps.
Well thnxs again. Best to all.
love D

Try it. Just go real slow, up or down. For me over 200, even to 225 made me sleep too lightly, but some people do 400 and more and like it fine. Good luck. Don't stop trying things, you'll find a med that works.
