Does this sound like Bipolar to you?

Posted by sdjeff on March 28, 2005, at 15:56:23

this is how my moods seem to work.

I switch from depression to irritability/hostility or mild happiness once a day to several times a day. When I'm stressed, these changes are more distinct.

My moods also change during the lunar cycles. I tend to be more irate on full moons.

Also, around November and July my moods tend to be really bad.

Hello,

I think you said you'd been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. There are two subtypes of schizoaffective disorder: depressive type and bipolar type. It sounds like you might have the bipolar type. What does your pdoc say?

Kind regards,
Ed.

That sounds like my super cycling patterns when I was unmedicated and having mixed bipolar symptoms. I never had the moon thing though. November and July *are* two of the worst months of the year for me as well. I agree with Ed.

Thanks all for your replies.

My pdoc never said whether I have the bipolar or depressive type of SZ. Come to think of it, I never thought to ask. I think I will tell him about this thing with my moods. Until last year, I never really tracked them before.

except for the moon and seasons, i've had periods within a day that my moods change very similar to yours- extreme rage, irritability, etc... for me (female) i got pegged with a BPD trait. does anyone notice a gender bias with this Dx.
later on the bpd was offically assessed and my T says that yes i have some traits but they are considered 'bpd depressive-type'
-anyway, i had to mention this.

you could be ultra rapid cycler or have some BPD 'traits', maybe mixed in with SAD??

There definitely is bias in docs and pdocs for labeling women as simploy emotionally labile/neurotic/hypochondriacal. It was frustrating and humiliating when I sought help for a myriad of health problems connected with biological, not personality-caused problems.

Now that I feel better, I contemplate writing letters to some of these doctors, and also think of what is most important to convey and how to convey it in the future to get the message across.
