I would like to know, from your personal experience (rather than out of a textbook or pubmed LOL) what sexual side effects you got from trazodone?
Thank you,
Ed.PS. I would also like to hear from people who've taken nefazodone (Serzone).

Hi,
I'd like to know how common anorgasmia/delayed orgasm is with trazodone.
Thank you,
Ed.

When I took it, it was in the hospital. They used it mainly for sleep, since it's not considered a very good AD.
Even at 200 mg it did nothing. I might as well have been taken a placebo. That's odd for me, since I'm usually very prone to sedation from meds.
Hope this helps, I know my experience is pretty atypical. It makes sleepy time for most people.

Hi Ed,
You mention in the PS that you're also interested in nefazodone. I took that as monotherapy for about 6 months. I did not find it very beneficial psychiatrically. Well, that's an understatement: it made me *more* anxious, agitated, and dysphoric.
However, I found it very pro-sexual. Almost as much as Wellbutrin was for me.
But, I think that for me both the paradoxical worsening of symptoms and the strong pro-sexuality with nefazodone might be a function of my liver enzymes. I'm an intermediate metabolizer for CYP-2D6, which breaks down mCPP, one of the metabolites of trazodone/nefazodone. (mCPP is known to be an anxiogenic and increases male sexual function, largely due to its agonism of the 5-HT2C receptor.)
Don't know if this helps, but I thought I'd post my experience anyway.
Best,

Hello!
Thank you for your post :-)
In what way was nefazodone prosexual? What effect did it have on sexual function?
Kind regards,
Ed.

Hi Ed,
Well, the nefazodone seemed to positively impact pretty much every aspect of my sexual function: libido, erectile function & strength, control, orgasm quality, and recovery time.
That and about 10 pounds of weight loss were definitely big perks for me. Too bad it didn't work otherwise...
Best,
cache-monkeyP.S. I think you are a pharmacist (or at least in training)? At least you're very medication-knowledgable. If you have the chance, would you be able to help with interpreting a drug-drug interaction (Valium-Depakote) from a PI. I've posted below in a seperate thread below. Here's the link:

I've taken trazodone a lot over the past 10 years and had no side effects from it at all. That is, unless you look on sleep as a side effect, since that's not what it's intended for. But since I was taking it for sleep and not for depression, I didn't think of sleep as a side effect.

I find it to be pro-sexual, especially in the morning. I take it before going to bed.

I only took traz for two nights before trashing it. I thought it was a lousy med and it actually made my sleep horrible. I wasn't on it long enough to see any sexual side effects.
I was on serzone though for several months. It helped a lot with sleep and anxiety, but didn't do much for my depressive symptoms. It was pro sexual for me, improving both desire and ability.

How much does trazodone (or nefaz) delay orgasm?

>dunno if its any help to you, I took trazodone with my flupenthixol for a short period. Made me feel utterly wiped out like half asleep half drunk so to be honest sex wasnt really on my mind. I did try sex once whilst on it. It was an effort but entirely normal apart from that.

Hi Ed,> Thank you for sharing your experience :-) Are you still doing well on pericyazine?
>Yeah I guess, my motivation has been well down and I have been oversleeping. Dont know if its due to the pericyazine, the continuing downward spiral of being unemployed and at a lose end or both. I still seem to be getting tremor especially in the morning and cramps in the back of my neck and knees but its not severe, when I hear from my new CPN I might mention it to her/him but I doubt they will do anything. All that aside my anxiety and paranoia is at an all time low, I went into the village today and the job centre, wandered about and was fine seems small but experiences like that have been rare until recently for me. Have had an annoying preoccupation about whether my food had been replaced by pureed octopus but thats stupid rather than a source of concern. Life goes on. Buns

Hi Bunny!
>Yeah I guess, my motivation has been well down and I have been oversleeping.
I just got out of bed and it's 5.00pm!!! Perhaps you should reduce your pericyazine dose a bit and take the whole lot in the evening. What do you think?
>being unemployed....
Unless I've got a morning lecture, I find it VERY difficult to get out of bed. I'm on holiday at the moment so I'm not getting any work done at all.

Hey Ed,
Sorry, been AFC for a few days. Umm, actually there were no problems with orgasm delay per se with the Serzone. I mention orgasm control as a beneficial aspect of nefazodone b/c for me with my SSRI trials it was either "really soon" or "not at all". With nefazodone it was basically ready whenever I was.
HTH, and thanks for your response to my Depakote/Valium question!

Did it actually improve your control (compared with being on no medication)?

Ed.

Ed,
When I was doing research yesterday on something else, I came across the following about Luvox and sexual side effects.

Hey Ed,
I actually think I had improved control on Serzone, relative to no meds. But I'm not entirely sure. (Before the S, I was off meds for about 9 months and really depressed so no libido. Since S, I haven'te really been fully off meds...)
Good luck with the trazodone.

It has improved libido and had pro erectional effects, but delayed ejaculation dosage dependent. Delay was not so strong compared to citalopram...The delay could be a positive effect but it depends of your partner. So as a consequence i dont like any delays and any change in this matter.
Look at this interesting article:
