ed_uk .. Are you a doctor??

Posted by Nickengland on March 18, 2005, at 15:55:33

Hi Ed,

I have been reading posts from this site alot recently to try and find various information, but have just joined today.

I have to say that reading through I have always noticed you give very good sound advice and seem extreamly knowledgeable about mental health matters and the drugs involved.

Could not help but ask if your a doctor or have some kind of medical experience?!

I hope you may be able to answer some questions I may have in the near future.

Best regards

Nick

Isn't Ed great! I know he'll answer you himself, but he's a pharmacy student in the University in England. Fondly, Phillipa

A Pharmacy student? How wonderful! A few of my friends are pharmacists, however; they are out-of-town. I have a question and am wondering if you could tell me which one of these medications can be causing me to feel very sluggish during the day. I have been diagnosed as bipolar II recently and am taking: Topamax, Zoloft, Strattera, Klonopin at night for RLS. I have an infection in my tooth at the moment and am taking Clindamycin as well. I realize this is quite a lot of meds to be taking, going from one SSRI before...to five medictions now. I would like to be able to discontinue something if possible in the future. I am quite active and the sluggishness is interfering with my life style. What is your opinion? -L

Babble Ed, as he goes home on weekends. I believe that is how he answers all his messages on the weekend. Fondly, Phillipa

Hello :-)

>I have a question and am wondering if you could tell me which one of these medications can be causing me to feel very sluggish during the day.

When did you start feeling sluggish? Did it start soon after adjusting your meds? Have you seen your doctor to rule out medical problems?

Regards,
Ed.

PS. It's a difficult question to answer because all the meds you're on have been reported to cause fatigue, even Strattera!

Hello!

LOL thank you :-)

I see you want to try gabapentin, topiramate or oxcarbazepine. Gabapentin is prescribed a lot in the UK, mainly for nerve pain, less so by psychiatrists. Topiramate and oxcarbazepine are not so commonly used, they're both available though :-)

Regards,
Ed.

I started feeling sluggish after adding the Zoloft to the Topamax. The Adderall had just been added the past month to be used for a trial period, and I think it could be causing me to feel a little more tired. I have been taking the Klonopin for around six years, and haven't noticed that side-effect until now. My M.D. gave me the Adderall and I do have to go back for a follow up in a few weeks, and I will be sure to tell her about the sluggish feeling I am getting from the medication. I do feel more calm these days, which is a improvement, considering I am an extremely anxious and high strung person. My husband doesn't feel as if he's living with a "wind up toy"!! Sometimes I feel as if I'm talking in slow motion, and that's a very strange feeling. I dont' feel like I'm me. My pdoc told me that I would feel as if I'm moving much more slowely, but I really wouldn't be, I would be moving at a "normal" speed. It feels almost at a standstill sometimes. -L

Hello,

What dose of Zoloft are you on? Any chance that you could decrease?

Ed.

100mg of Zoloft. I started breaking them in half, and am thinking of reducing the topamax tomorrow to 100mg per day. I tried to run today and could barely make two miles, which is nothing for me. I really can't continue with this lack of energy, or feeling of "slow motion." Will the Strattera help with anxiety or depression at all? Will I be able to omit one of the medications completely in the future? I really have to do something, (tomorrow) because I won't give up my life as it was. Heart disease runs in my family on both sides, and excercise is a must for me. -L

Hi!

> I started breaking them in half, and am thinking of reducing the topamax tomorrow to 100mg per day.

Hopefully that will help. Keep me posted! Did you pdoc say it was ok to reduce the Topamax?

> I tried to run today and could barely make two miles, which is nothing for me.

LOL.... sounds good to me, I can't even run 2 metres!

>Will the Strattera help with anxiety or depression at all?

Possibly, a few people seem to find it helpful for depression.

Regards,
Ed.
