Benzo's good for depression?

Posted by alienatari on March 17, 2005, at 5:30:43

Hello. I was reading that some benzo's such as Xanax are good for depression while others arnt?

I was always under the impression that benzo's can make depression worse? Is it likely that Ativan would make depression worse? I take ativan and havent noticed this but Id like to know. Would it be a better choice to go on Xanax instead?

Thanks.

I don't know how scientific the evidence is that any benzo increases depression- other than that it does do that for SOME people.. I'm on Klonopin and it hasn't increased depression for me.

I think it depends on whether or not your main problem is anxiety or depression.

I know there are some Benzos that apparently also posses anti depressant properties.

Unfortunatly none of these Benzos are available in the US or the UK, perhapse I dreamt it up

Yes there are, I know that Xanax and Klonopin effect serotonin release. Xanax is also a trialzobenzodiazpine which is a bit different from regular ones, so it has some unique anti-d props. If you have a lot of anxiety, this can cause depression itself. I was on klonopin for a long time which helped my mild depression because I had so bad social anxiety and GAD.

Hello!

You can get Xanax on a private prescription. Not on the NHS though - it's 'black listed'.

Hi Lunesta!

I'm curious, why did you change your name to Lunesta?

Ed.

If ativan is working for you I wouldn't change it. Everyone is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Fondly, Phillipa

I tried Ativan for my anxiety once and it only had paradoxical effects on me(did the opposite) so i got off it and I got depressed once i got off it, and im dont even have depression, so it just might be able to help it.

Thanks for the posts everyone. I guess I'll stick with Ativan but ill ask my doc which one he would prefer me to take. I use to take Xanax for a while a few years back and became addicted to it (not severely but still I was addicted somewhat). So I will doubt that he will want me to take xanax. At the moment Im just taking ativan a few times a week only to avoid dependance.

Take care.

WOE the Resistance.. Klonopin??

The Restistance posted that Klonopin affects seratonin????

Is this true??

The reason I ask is because the psych doc said I never needed any medication that touched my seratonin.. and now my doctor has me on Klonopin.

I have often sat here silently thinking this Klonopin might be making me worse but thought I was just being paranoid.

If it affects seratonin, is it possible that is making me worse as far as anxiety goes???

Hello Spriggy:
Yes, Klonopin has a (apparently) minor
affect on serotonin, by very slightly increasing 5-HT. I don't know WHICH 5-HT (i.e 1, 2 etc.).

Scott (SLS) may know, or Ed UK.

I really don't think it's in an amount that has much impact, because it is so often used with SSRI's or other serotonergic anti-depressants.

If you are unusually sensitive to serotonin, maybe ask your doctor, or other medical professional.

Why do you have to avoid serotonergic medications?

Take care.
Jas
