anything to counteract sexual s/e???

Posted by ants on March 16, 2005, at 9:26:06

I am seeing my doc this week and would like to add something to my Effexor to counteract the sexual side effects. For the first three months, I was a total non-sexual being. It sucked. Things have slowly been improving, but I want my old life back and so does my fiance! I have heard maybe adding Wellbutrin could help. Any other ideas or experiences?

I understand how frustrating it can be to suddenly become "sexless" and for a newly engaged person that must be really frustrating! I too am on Effexor after first trying Wellbutrin because I was, similar to you, newly married (and enjoying a normal, healthy sex life) and told my doc I did not want to take anything that would impede the libido etc etc. I had a bad response to the Wellbutrin, very scary dreams etc. and that is why I am on the effexor. What i know about Wellbutrin is that it does not seem to cause a decrease in libido but it does not nec. increase it. so, unless you were to substitute the wellbutrin (which works for many) for the effexor, i'm not sure you would notice that much of a change. I recently started taking remeron (in addition to the effexor) and was really impressed (briefly overwhelmed even) with my sudden return of a sex drive. So, you may ask your doc about that. Best of luck to you and congrats on the engagement!

hi - i just read your weight gain post and wanted to add that remeron does make you gain the pounds. I have gained on effexor but i think more because of lack of energy (and job) and general low activity as compared to before. However it was a long slow weight gain and considering how busy it gets planning a wedding etc. i think you'll be a lovely bride. i have a funny story about my wedding dress and weight gain -if you wanna hear it lemme know, otherwise best of luck!

Ants

Got the same problem due to elevated prolactine levels caused by amisulpride. Mirapex and especially cabergoline (Dostinex)are very prosexual drugs that lower prolactine levels due to their dopaminergic action. Also they have antidepressant properties.

Good luck

Hi there,

I just wanted to chime in: Wellbutrin can actually increase libido in some people. When I was on it, my libido shot through the roof. It was almost too much. I think that in some people it might also act to reverse sexual side effects of serotonin-type drugs, but in most it doesn't. It might be worth a shot, though.

Best,

ant-my wedding dress story

well, the story is not knock your socks off hilarious but i think it shows how crazy planning and preparing for weddings can be....

anyway. so i was planning on getting married after a two year engagement because i was attending grad school...well, to specify, after college i decided to become a chef and went to the Culinary Institute in New York. During the winter break (the last time I would be back home before graduation) and about 1 year before the big day I went shopping, sort of in a frenzy, for my dress. I know, I know, you would think i would be worried i may gain weight before the big day but i had already finished half of the culinary program and had actually lost weight because the schedule and trips in to NYC on weekends were so hectic. I really wanted a gorgeous, simple Vera Wang gown but it came down to the simple fact that if I were to get the gown I drooled over, my guestlist for the reception would have to be small enough to fit on a cocktail napkin. I was really fortunate to have a supportive family footing the bill but, in reality, a 7000.00 dress was crazy. So, after a week of disappointment I went to our local Neiman Marcus w/o an appt. (you know how those bridal sales ladies act when you don't have an appt.) anyway, i ask, sort of meekly, if i could get a last minute appt. that day to try on some dresses. The lady tells me that the bridal dept. ladies all have a meeting but if I came back afterwards she would help me out. So I come back and see the saleslady and the first thing she tells me after I explain my delima etc. is that the dept. meeting she was in had to do with marking down the seasons Vera Wang sample dresses. My jaw dropped. She said no one knew except me, her and the staff. My mouth remained opened. All the dresses were in my size, size 6, my mouth reamined open. All dresses were marked down to 500.00 no matter what the retail cost. I almost blacked out...anyway, I ended up getting the 7000.00 gown I had lusted after for months. I paid 500 even steven and the thing fit like it was made for me. Of course (I being so tasteless and axcited about my super deal) called every friend and told them the great story etc etc. Well, when i returned to the CIA I finished the 2nd year courses whichn included pastry, patissier, chocolate and confections. Yep. I ballooned up to a size 10 in one year. When I came back I couldn't even zip the dress over my hips. I stood in the dressing room and cried. The sales lady almost began to cry. Now i think about it and laugh but man, whoo lordie, it was not a laughing matter then. I had 4 months to the wedding and knew I couldn't lose that much weight that fast but the sales lady said they just couldn't alter the dress that much - the bodice was completely hand beaded with tiny seed pearls and crystals. I cried more. Anyway, it ended up that my regular Russian seamstress who altered my pants etc. became my guardian angel. She said she would fix it. She and her sister spent weeks carefully removing the hand beading from the sides and after adding in more silk from the length of the dress, they carefully re-embroidered the whole thing. It was an amazing feat and one i am still amazed and grateful for. Anyway, my advice is not to go to culinary school after you have your dress! Take Care and best of luck. Your wedding is gonnna be fantastic.

wow. that is a story! At least I know that if I do balloon, somewhere out there I will find a Russian seamstress to fix my dress for me!

Thanks to all for your replies. I seem to be over my crazy worries for the time being.
